Just wanted to wish everyone a great Thanksgiving, and let Laura know that her feathered friends got to NM safely :)
This texture is from Liz (FireDance.UK)
Check out her site, she rocks!!
We are lucky to be graced by these cranes on their journey south… catching this image brought joy while pondering their existence, journey and thinking that there will be more opportunities to see and photograph them in several NM locales this year… anyway… a little soft, this at 1/500th but this was at 1200mm handheld. It was great to see them here at Los Poblanos while kibitzing with folks walking behind us commenting on the length of our lenses and we admiring their great dogs.

I bought some organic lavender as a Christmas present at Los Poblanos a week ago, but didn't take my camera with me. Big mistake.
So I went back today, camera in tow, to photograph this interesting scene.
Made it sepia to give it an "old world" feel.
Within 15 minutes of driving, biking or walking, I can visit seven first class Bernalillo County, City of Albuquerque or City of Corrales open spaces. Los Poblanos is one of these and is well known to birders with 216 species reported in 2023 on 2,332 checklists in eBird, as of today. It’s a great place for a walking, dog walking, birding and great wildlife photography opportunities. Each year there are also several well-known and attended seasonal events and festivals.
Early Thanksgiving Day morning, out to do a quick check for cranes, geese and waterfowl and I’m not disappointed. I estimate and record over 275 geese, crane, crow and other smaller birds. The migrating Sandhill Crane is the star of the show and a coveted photograph in several world class locations across New Mexico and mostly in the Rio Grande valley.
To see a large amount of well documented information in a very interesting format about the Sandhill Crane (and all migrating birds in the USA) and most importantly their migration patterns visit this great Audubon site: Sandhill Crane - Migration Map | Bird Migration Explorer (audubon.org). It's an eye- opener.
Thanksgiving morning… doing my best to photograph larger game when this lone Phoebe stopped by and landed on a nearby, chilly morning frosted sapling. Being out early, perhaps she just couldn’t sleep given that it’s such a great holiday and she was looking forward to seeing friends and family.
Out early on Thanksgiving morning, over 150 Canada Geese on the ground, mingling, resting, eating in the low-cut Los Poblanos fields. Some are arriving from the north and the east and landing; some taking off and heading southwest – certainly a busy Albuquerque airport on Thanksgiving!
I am passed on the open space trails by several walkers, joggers and dog walkers with their attractive and energetic dogs smartly dressed in sweaters and stylish warm-ups. Several make a poke at me saying that I need a bigger camera and lens or someone to help me carry my rig – all are smiling and wish me a Happy Thanksgiving and I return the well-wishes. For me, this is the best time of the year in the USA… happy to be home.
Not sure if I like this.....I'm gonna stew over it.
