Pope Pius XI, born Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti (31 May 1857 – 10 February 1939), reigned from 6 February 1922 to his death in 1939. He was the first sovereign of Vatican City from its creation as an independent state on 11 February 1929. He took as his papal motto, "Pax Christi in Regno Christi," translated "The Peace of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ."

Pius XI issued numerous encyclicals, including Quadragesimo anno on the 40th anniversary of Pope Leo XIII's groundbreaking social encyclical Rerum novarum, highlighting capitalistic greed of international finance, and social justice issues, and Quas primas, establishing the feast of Christ the King. The encyclical Studiorum ducem, promulgated 29 June 1923, was written on the occasion of the 6th centenary of the canonization of Thomas Aquinas, whose thought is acclaimed as central to Catholic philosophy and theology. The encyclical also singles out the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Angelicum as the preeminent institution for the teaching of Aquinas: "ante omnia Pontificium Collegium Angelicum, ubi Thomam tamquam domi suae habitare dixeris" (before all others the Pontifical Angelicum College, where Thomas can be said to dwell).

To establish or maintain the position of the Catholic Church, he fostered and concluded a record number of concordats, including the Reichskonkordat with Germany. During his pontificate, the longstanding hostility with the Italian government over the status of the papacy and the Church in Italy was successfully resolved in the Lateran Treaty of 1929. He was unable to stop the persecution of the Church and the killing of clergy in Mexico, Spain and the Soviet Union.

He canonized important saints, including Thomas More, Petrus Canisius, Konrad von Parzham, Andrew Bobola and Don Bosco. He beatified and canonized Thérèse de Lisieux, for whom he held special reverence, and gave equivalent canonization to Albertus Magnus, naming him a Doctor of the Church due to the spiritual power of his writings.

Pius XI created the feast of Christ the King in response to anti-clericalism. He took a strong interest in fostering the participation of lay people throughout the Catholic Church, especially in the Catholic Action movement. The end of his pontificate was dominated by defending the Catholic Church from intrusions into Catholic life and education.

He died on 10 February 1939 in the Apostolic Palace and was buried in the grottos of Saint Peter's Basilica.

Alfonso XIII (Spanish: Alfonso León Fernando María Jaime Isidro Pascual Antonio de Borbón y Habsburgo-Lorena; English: Alphonse Leon Ferdinand Mary James Isidor Pascal Anthony of Bourbon and Habsburg-Lorraine; 17 May 1886 – 28 February 1941) was King of Spain from 1886 until 1931.

Alfonso was monarch from birth, as his father Alfonso XII had died the previous year. Until his 16th birthday in 1902, his mother, Maria Christina of Austria, served as his regent, in a period which saw Spain lose its Caribbean and Pacific colonies during the Spanish–American War. Due to family ties to both sides, Alfonso kept his kingdom neutral in World War I (1914–1918).

From 1923 to 1930, Alfonso supported the dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera. In 1931, in the face of overwhelming popular rejection, Alfonso fled the country as the Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed. In exile, he retained his claim to the throne until 1941, when he abdicated in favor of his son Juan. He died six weeks later. A plaza in Iloilo City, Philippines (now Plaza Libertad) was named in his honor called Plaza Alfonso XIII.

Irizar I6 new 4/2017 Passenger Plus, Ashford Taken at the BUSES Festival 2017 held at the British Motor Museum Gaydon.

An early 80s Pentax camera which I usually keep in a drawer. It has a 50mm f/1.7 manual focus lens attached. This is a mixture of natural light and a touch of bounced flash. I'm still not sure if the darned photo is straight. I'm having trouble with that.

The Pentax Program Plus was a very advanced SLR for its time. In the early 80s the Pentax system really took the world by storm. I do not see this particular camera discussed very much on the net, though. The "Super" and the "ME" versions seems to be more popular.

I am at home sick today. I thought I'd take a couple photos and do some photo editing while I'm lying around. The decongestant that I'm on may have something to do with my inability to keep the camera level, even with a tripod. I guess I'll have to look at this again tomorrow.

Brought flashes back into house and will get creative this week

It no longer has a pantograph, it has fancy new buffers, it has an air brake pipe with a red top, which indicates the loco has compressors on board and it's sporting the livery and number that the CEGB gave it for it's tenure at Heysham Power Station, but there's no mistaking it's origins! The last of four locos to be delivered to Kearsley Power Station, near Bolton, covering a period from 1928 to 1946 and surviving to the power station's closure in 1982. This was the only one of the four to have three windscreens, identifying it instantly as the former Kearsley No.4.

'westernbasher', Mr Heyl and myself were fortunate to ride on this loco on the 10th August, 1975, during the diversions caused by a train crash at Weaver junction. Whilst roaming around looking for lineside opportunities, we turned up at the power station and asked if we could take some photographs and the few personnel on duty turned the overhead wires on and duly took us up to the exchange sidings in this loco!

This was the first time I'd seen it since that day in 1975!
