In a biogeographic definition, paramo is any intertropical mountain ecosystem, characterized by shrubby vegetation that generally occurs from altitudes of about 3,000 to 4,000 meters or up to 5,000 meters, that is, in regions above the forest line. continuous but still below the permanent snow line. It is found in East Africa, New Guinea, and Central and South America. However, since in each of these regions this ecosystem has a specific name, when discussing Paramos, we refer specifically to Andean Paramos.
In this strict sense of the term, all Paramos are located in the neotropical zone, mainly in northwestern South America, present in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador. The ecosystem occupies over 30,000 km² of South America and represents 7% of Ecuador's territory. In absolute terms, Colombia is home to 50% of the extent of Paramos (in its three branches of the Andes) and the largest Paramo in the world (Sumapaz).
Paramos' climate is characterized by wide daily fluctuations in temperature and humidity. In general, cold and humid, can undergo a sudden and drastic change in which temperatures fluctuate from below freezing to 30 ° C plus in a daily freeze-thaw cycle. High altitude in tropical locations produces a special, cold, low air density atmosphere that allows for greater dispersion of ultraviolet radiation (light and heat). This climate can be summed up in the phrase "winter every night and summer every day."
In Paramo ecosystems, soils are generally recent, of glacial and volcanic origin, and many are still in formation. Its structure is a combination of organic material that decomposes very slowly in cold weather with volcanic ash. They usually have low pH (acidity) because of the abundance of moisture and high content of organic matter. These characteristics contribute to soil water retention, which in turn is the basis of an essential environmental service: the constant storage and distribution of clean water to lower places.
The largest and most known area is the Páramo grass, which covers large areas of the mountain ranges. It extends from approximately 3,500 to 4,100 m in height, and is mainly composed of grasses and small shrubs.

An American Avocet scans the shallows for a bite to eat. I think they're rather graceful looking birds with their swooped beak and long legs. The coppery summer plumage is also a plus in my book.

A traditional "from the right" shooter (is it because I am right-handed?), I was surprised to see the plus in dynamics that shooting "from the left" can afford.

Norman Hudson holds a roll of this cool plastic mesh designed to back up batt fiberglass insulation. The worker on top of the scaffold is stripping off squares of 40-year-old stucco, while the man on the ground is loading into a truck.
Any colorful building material is a plus in my book, even though it will be covered over.

Well I am definitely not a wildlife photographer but when you see a scene like this you have to grab a shot. I only have a lens up to 400mm and this was at that plus in crop mode in camera. I was on the bank of the river so I couldn't get any closer. If anyone wants to buy me a 600mm prime lens get in touch (eye roll) Happy New Year to everyone.. Kris..

The previous versions were processed in Google's Photos App on my iPhone 7 Plus, In this experiment, I did use a bit of color processing.

Sometimes you just get lucky when I took the shot of this roof- scape I had not noticed the cat at all. It was not till I got home that I spotted it. So I will take no credit but I am pleased with the results add a little perspective

I have to say the seats are extremely comfortable and a very nice kitchen working area with plenty of storage for all our needs... the plus in storage is the linen cabinet that holds plenty of extra blankets and pillows...
Good morning everyone. You guessed it...another long range pic this morning. This being of a Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) photographed on the last day of January while perched in a Dogwood tree. And once again it's a very long shot, a good 40 yards, but it turned out a lot better than I expected at the time. Plus in spite of the one branch in front of the bird the Dogwood tree made for a nice setting against the mocha chocolate colored background.

We have a beautiful weather front moving closer to town. It's been hovering in southern Minnesota all night, but we may catch the bottom corner if we are lucky.
It's been pretty dry here in north central Iowa this summer, and when it does rain it's an inch plus in 20 min. The crops still look good, but the parks, golf course and lawns look like mid August!

I had to go shopping for some eggs and went to a new tiny market place at a local farm to purchase eggs.
The only 'good' thing that has come from Covid-19 in our area is that folks have gotten creative.
The small Ag Stores are seeing more locals, the small farm markets have seen an upsurge of folks purchasing home grown foods.
To me, this is a huge plus in a wicked world.

My original idea with this tree was to do star trails behind it. The clouds rolled in and so I quit the series and began taking single shots as seen in my prior posting of the light pillars. Andromeda is off to the left of the Mulberry Tree while the North Star shines to the right. The faint northern end of the Milkyway shines between the two. This is a stack of 44 images processed with Advanced Stacker Plus in PSCC 2015 and LR 6.
