The Chinese Lantern plant has many names, such as Japanese Lantern and winter cherry. It has a large orange to red papery covering over its fruit. It blooms with white flowers in summer but the red lanterns appear in the fall. It grows wild in many places and is popular as an ornamental. It can last a long time in a vase, but don't touch it -- it crumbles easily.

The local hardware store carries these brightly colored pots, just waiting to be filled by a plant. When I browsed the area outside where the plants are displayed I did not find any cooking herbs, which is what I like to grow in pots. According to a salesperson, those plants do not come in until mid April. I know basil has trouble growing when it is still cold, but there are others that can handle being inside by a very sunny window. I have some pots just waiting for the right time.
Some of my cuttings came little late into the pots this year but seem happy enough. They'll just grow little later this year :)
I like the light and shadow play coupled with in focus bits and bokeh on this shot.
Seeds etc. from a plant in our garden.
comments welcome as always. thanks for looking.
