On June 27, 1979, BN Train 23 is cutting through Glacier National Park behind two units including SD(P)45 6593 at Paola. At the time I thought nothing of the semaphores because they were all over the placeI

This was a great trip where I got to chase the Milwaukee Pacific Extension, BN F units and Alcos, and Amtrak's North Coast Hi, all long gone. This shot was just a grab of another boring BN train!

When I was in England I stumbled upon this man on the beach, half dressed, bruised and bleeding. He was shivering violently and his teeth chattered together so much his words were barely audible, but he managed to tell me he had carried this suitcase full of rocks all the way from France, or rather... swam with it... across the English Channel.

When I asked him "Why!!?", he explained that he was carrying out an old tradition; The suitcase full of rocks represented all his worries, and he'd swam the channel in order to take them, and leave them, far, far away. I wondered out loud if he was going to swim all the way back again. To which he replied, "Fuck no, I'm taking the Eurostar! ...Do you have any socks?"

We laughed and laughed, thawed our feet and hands on car air vents, and then went back to the placeI was staying, where we ate Mexican food, and I discovered he was actually a crazy Flickr photographer named Simon McCheung!! Small word, ay?

BOOK TO YOUR FACE

My friend Rory is amazing and I had the best time of my life in Paris this summer. One thing this friend of mine did is to take me to this 1950s-esque surfer bar that was in homage to, oddly enough, American surfer music (The Beach Boys being the most recognizable) The bartenders were really nice and they gave us this French whiskey I'm still convinced was part of one of my best waking dreams forever. I had to take a picture so that I could make sure I would never forget, even if a car crashed into me and hit me on my bicycle once I was back in Chicago.

The 10.5m sculpture of a red poinsettia in Emma Miller Placeis called PoinsettiaRiverfire

Brisbane, the only capital city with a floral emblem, adopted the poinsettia, a native of Mexico, as its floral emblem in 1930

“More than ever the flower symbolises the increasing flamboyant cultural mix of the city’s population”, says the attached plaque

Local artist Luke Roberts says: “Arching sykward in an aspiring and uplifting way like fireworks, PoinsettiaRiverfire aims to inspire optimism and, lotus-like, evoke a sense of the transcendental. The tongues of flame bracts herald transition to a new era.”

Our larger IGA grocery store

Marché Louise Ménard. This is the other IGA grocery store that is close to the smaller one. It belongs to the same woman from our town who owns several in the area and in Montréal. All are very special, warm and well decorated. Every employee is very curteous. The music is very pleasant and non-invasive. Louise Ménard added a woman's touch!

Les Marchés Louise Ménard (IGA).

In our town, we have two IGA grocery stores owned by Louise Ménard, the small one in the Village.

My last uploaded image mentions some of what I wanted to say about this place. It is just astounding that such a huge and wonderfully designed structure has been left to rot like this. After decades of people doing whatever they wanted in there (from taking pictures pointless vandalism and violence... to looting whatever wasn't nailed down, to prying out everything that was)... finally, the placeis under careful watch by federal authorities, or at least it sure was in early 2005. Apparently, plans were made to implode this place, but alas, it's too sturdy to go that route.

Few buildings I have seen in North America (on-line or in pictures) are this impressive; the opulence in the construction, the combined elegance and durability... I don't know if one could re-create a building like this anymore. It is walking distance from downtown, and it's ridiculous that such abuilding can be simply abandoned as this one has. Of course there is serious abandonment in many American cities, and Detroit has surely suffered the most of any big American city, but the waste is really something to behold in person. That, and the fact that every single window has been long smashed out of here, with only a few broken pieces of glass stubbornly holding on in some frames.

The weather forecast told danger of night frost. I rushed down to save the newly installed water supply at our cottage. by turning on some heat On my way out to our placeI was met with this sight. Some minutes later it was dark and I had to pull out the head lamp gear to find my way back to the car. And yes - the night was cold. Autumn is definitely here.
