A 13th-century Norman castle with a circular shell-keep and still encloses the principal rooms. It was built on the mound occupied by an earlier Norman castle. The the rooms were mainly 2 storey and the gatehuse was originally 3 storey.
The keep is on a mound or motte surrounded by a dry ditch. The grassy area in the foreground is where the bailey was and would have had many buildings for everyday living. The bailey would have been defended by a fortified wall.
The walls would have have been rendered and whitewashed and must have been an impressive sight.
