In the communist era this was a state run department store, but in 1994 it became the site of the first McDonald's in Bulgaria (and now also, a casino). It was politically, economically and culturally a very symbolic event, and at the time of the opening people lined up for hours to try it. I wish I could have seen their reactions. Bulgarian cuisine places a great emphasis on fresh, seasonal, local and home-cooked food--always with lots of fresh herbs--and it's almost impossible to describe to a Bulgarian what passes for a tomato in the US. It never had too many people the times we passed it, but the McDonald's does still seem to draw groups with children, tourists, and a few locals with eccentric tastes. Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
