Insects crawl into an opening under the "tongue." The translucent parts you see around the top are like windows that let in light. The insects think they are openings, and go to them, trying to get out. They are not openings. There are hairs pointing downwards inside the pitcher. The bugs eventually fall down, guided by the hairs, and can't get up.
