Julia Trotti, Your photography amazing, your youtube insightful, your models beautiful... your presets?... universal ! Thank you.
We just had to have our Sewer line replaced and I really was fascinated by the mechanical engineering aspect and the equipment.
These pictures were taken some hours after a major water main burst at the junction with Haydons Road and Merton High Street in the late 1980's. Four 36" mains run from the pumping station at I believe Hampton or Portsmouth Road Thames Ditton. They run in domino style along a route avoiding houses and other sensitive buildings into central London. One or other would occasionally burst resulting in the chaos that can be seen here in Merton High Street and as far away as Tooting Broadway. The scene in Merton looks more like a bomb crater. The entire road surface was lifted with water flooding into every inspection pit including electricity and telephones.

The device here pulled the pipe burster through the old pipe cavity, dragging the new pipe line behind it. The wooden beams are just for bracing. This is in the den, against the wall adjacent to the guest bathroom.
Damn...it got a whole lot worse! I went to remove the sink in the other bathroom and a pipe broke in the wall while trying to turn off the hot water. Yikes!
The pipe burster. The winch pulled the cable attached to the tip of the cone; the new pipe was attached to the base of the cone. The base of the cone was slightly wider than the old pipe, thus the old pipe (what was left of it) was burst as the cone was pulled through it.

The new pipe was pre-assembled; it was made out of some kind of flexible ABS. It ran out the basement door and down the hillside before the pipe burster slowly pulled it all beneath the house.
