Pioneer House Mantle I shot this a number of years ago because I like the rustic feel of the mantle piece and the sunlight coming in from the side window, found in North Carolina.
Pioneer Cabin Interior this old bowl and pitcher was sitting on this old hand made table by an open door so it was some what back lit, shot in the Smokey Mountains.

Rarely spoke of the Winter Olympics.
Because every day was the Winter Olympics.

With tree branches scraping down the sides of the former Santa Fe GP7U, the hogger aboard a westbound Maumee & Western freight keeps a close eye on his train as it proceeds over some rough track between Okolona and Jewell on the former Wabash Fifth District. While it may be hard to believe, this shot is as level as possible. Scenes like this were common in the "good old days" of MAW operation. Pioneer Rail took over in 2013 and has made substantial improvements in the time since then.
I'll be posting a few more shots of the MAW over the next few days.

The Pioneer One is the world's first media ship. Equipped with an electric motor, recording studios, and a newsroom, the ship began operations in May 2020.
The editorial ship embodies the editorial team's commitment to democratic control of power. Therefore, it patrols the Spree River in the government district daily—between Bellevue Palace, the Chancellery, and the Reichstag.
As a floating editorial office, a place for meetings and events, and a production facility for participatory journalism that engages readers, viewers, and listeners as well as politicians, entrepreneurs, and cultural workers.

I composed this image while visiting Utah's Grafton Ghost Ttown, circa mid-1800's. Primitive fencing; still serviceable and attractive.
Pioneer Peak Magic
Some times a perfect scene just comes together. I have been fortunate to be able to capture some of those amazing scenes. On this night I was able to capture one of those scenes. The shooting star, the northern lights to the left of this picture and the clarity of the reflection off of the water. I was also very fortunate to have the oppritunity to be able to shoot along side Todd Salat. That is his blurry image checking one of his cameras in the middle of the foreground. A perfectly magical night. A great way to end the aurora season.

Union Pacific’s LUF51 local creeps slowly across Pioneer Road in Draper, Utah on Aug. 22, 1989. Beginning late in 1985, this section of Provo main would see very little through traffic as the UP was granted trackage rights on the shorter and faster D&RGW main line between Lakota Junction and Grant Tower in Salt Lake City.
Today, this right of way is owned by Utah Transit Authority, and serves as a tail track for stowing extra light rail vehicles for the afternoon rush downtown.
The lesser goldfinches are sticking around, back for a fourth consecutive day. They are pretty clearly in a pair and yesterday I saw the female picking at some dry moss and inspecting some hemp twine, showing every sign of preparing to nest and put down roots. I can't quite figure out what's the record for northernmost nesting, but I think it's fair to call these two pioneers. Lesser goldfinch, backyard Olympia.
Note (5.16.23): After some days absence, they are back again.
I just love this shot. A poppy gets a foothold on the retaining wall of the Theater of Dionysos on the flanks of the Acropolis in Athens. But, besides making for a nice photo, this shot shows off some significant ancient masonry. This wall dates to early Imperial Roman days and represents the final set of major renovations to the theater, holding back the earthen bank making up 'house right'. The incised marginal draft, highlighting the perfection of the fit between the drystone blocks, is characteristic of Roman large ashlar masonry of the time.
We have just returned from a dream holiday in South Australia and I thought I’d kick this new series off with some highlights of the Flinders Ranges. This photo is of a pioneer cottage located in Arkaroola, approximately 700 kilometers north of Adelaide city centre in the northern Flinders Ranges.
In 2011, the South Australian premier Mike Rann announced a ban on mining and secured its nomination for World Heritage listing.

This church, one of the oldest structures in Macomb County, Michigan, was built by a Methodist congregation in 1857. Since 1958, it has been the home of the First Baptist Church of Warren.
It stands today with it's original construction, and original materials (although it looks like it could use a new paint job).
