Pines have a two-year reproductive cycle. At the beginning of the 1st year the ovulate strobili (future seed cones) are pollinated, but the female gametophyte inside each ovule doesn't become mature until the following spring. That's when fertilization happens, and then it takes another year for the seeds to mature. This is a new ovulate strobilus of eastern white pine, seen today, May 27, 2018, in Miami County, Ohio, USA.
