In young roots, the vascular cylinder is surrounded by two rings of cells, the pericycle and endodermis, and above these layers the cortex and epidermis. In older roots underling activity of the cork cambium replaces epidermal and a portion of cortical tissues with a protective zone of cork rich periderm.

 

A well developed cortex of 4 to 5 layers of thin-walled parenchymatous cells contains clusters of sclerenchymatous stone cells and small resin canals.

 

The inner-most layer of the cortex is marked by a single- layered endodermis of brown suberized cells containing dark staining tannin.

 

Just below the endodermis is a multi-layered pericycle containing tannin and starch grains.

 

The vascular cylinder or stele consists of an outer narrow ring of phloem,and deep to this, the vascular cambium. The vascular cambium produces annual growth of secondary phloem towards the outside of the root and secondary xylem towards center of the root. Crushed primary phloem is present outside the secondary phloem. Because of greater production of xylem, the bulk of the vascular cylinder is dominated by radially arranged rays of secondary xylem interspaced with medullary rays of parenchyma cells. Annual growth rings of spring and summer wood is difficult to distinguish in roots . The xylem has no true vessels, consisting entirely of tracheids. The phloem consists of sieve tubes and phloem parenchyma, lacking companion cells.

 

The center of the root is occupied by small degenerated pith surrounded by primary xylem and large resin canals

Pinus edulis, the state tree of New Mexico, is common to the Taos area. Perhaps most similar to the Mexican Pinus cembroides in having mostly 2 (3) needles per fascicle, the leaves of Pinus edulis are over 1 mm in width. This region that descends in elevation from Taos to Española transitions out of the expanses of sagebrush steppe and is essentially devoid of Bromus tectorum. This site lies along highway 68 just to the southwest of Taos, Taos County, New Mexico, about where the highway and the Rio Grande meet.

Similar to the Ponderosa Pine but with a larger cone and inhabiting the Sierra Nevada especially along the eastern flank and central drainages. This area lies along Woods Creek just north of the Woods Creek crossing.

Parc de la Nova Icària

Aquest és un dels espais verds construïts el 1992 arran dels Jocs Olímpics de Barcelona. És un espai encalmant que contrasta amb l'agitació de la Ronda del Litoral, que en aquest punt emergeix del túnel que s'inicia al Parc de les Cascades. Grans ponts de fusta comuniquen la Vila Olímpica amb les platges, i suaus pendents de gespa amb iris, saücs i desmais van a parar a un gran llac amb el perfil de la mítica illa d'Icària.

El Parc de la Nova Icària té una entrada absolutament olímpica: la plaça dels Campions. Es tracta d'un espai rectangular i lleugerament elevat al qual s'accedeix per una rampa. Es va pavimentar amb plaques dedicades als campions dels Jocs Olímpics de 1992 i a figures destacades de l'esport de tots els temps, que va ser necessari retirar i guardar en un lloc segur quan van començar a "desaparèixer".

Un gran solàrium verd

Al final de la plaça dels Campions emergeix, sorollosa, la Ronda del Litoral. Entre aquesta via i les platges hi ha amplis espais de gespa que s'estenen sobre turonets poc més que insinuats i que, sobretot els diumenges, es converteixen en un immens solàrium. Aquest és un parc familiar, molt concorregut per la gent a qui els dies assolellats li agrada passejar pel litoral barceloní.

L'illa d'Icària

Dóna nom al parc i la forma de la seva costa està dibuixada en la riba del gran estany que, des de la meitat del parc, s'estén fins més enllà del carrer Jaume Vicens Vives. Vora l'aigua, els suaus pendents dels turonets de gespa, grans protagonistes vegetals d'aquesta zona verda, finalitzen el seu recorregut.

Vegetació

Als camins que voregen la plaça dels Campions hi ha moreres (Morus alba), pins blancs i pins pinyers (Pinus halapensis i Pinus pinea) i margallons (Chamaerops humilis). La vegetació arbòria també està composta per bellaombres (Phytolacca dioica) i alguns exemplars d'olivera (Olea europaea) i d'eucaliptus (Eucalyptus sp.). A prop del llac hi destaquen uns quants desmais (Salix babylonica) i un gran pollancre (Populus sp.). Les palmeres washingtònies (Washingtonia robusta i Washingtonia filifera) també s'eleven, elegants, en aquest parc.

Art i arquitectura

Cinc ponts de fusta per a vianants i un per a vehicles travessen la ronda i comuniquen la ciutat amb el parc i el mar. Són estructures vistoses i al mateix temps lleugeres, sobretot les de fusta, que s'integren perfectament al paisatge i li confereixen personalitat.

El Parc de la Nova Icària és, juntament amb el del Port Olímpic, el de les Cascades, el del Poblenou i el de Carles I, un dels cinc grans espais verds que es van construir als antics terrenys industrials del Poblenou a principis de la dècada de 1990.

Barcelona va recuperar aquests terrenys i en va dedicar una part a la creació de nous espais verds públics: els anomenats Parcs del Litoral. Aquesta actuació va formar part de la important renovació urbanística que es va realitzar a la façana litoral de la ciutat amb motiu dels Jocs Olímpics de 1992.

This is one of the green areas built for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. It is a peaceful area which contrasts with the bustle of the Ronda del Litoral, which emerges at this point from the tunnel beginning at Parc de les Cascades. Large wooden bridges connect the Vila Olímpica with the beaches, and grass slopes with iris and willow trees end at a large lake in the shape of the mythical island of Icaria.

Parc de la Nova Icària has a very Olympic entrance: La Plaça dels Campions (Champions Square). It is a rectangular, slightly elevated area accessed by a ramp. It was paved with plaques dedicated to the champions of the 1992 Olympic Games and to important figures in sport from all time. However, it was necessary to remove these to keep in a safe place when they began to "disappear".

A large green solarium

At the end of Plaça dels Campions, the noisy Ronda del Litoral emerges. Between this road and the beaches there are large lawn areas which extends over small hills which especially on Sundays, become an immense solarium. This is a family park, very popular with the people who enjoy walking along the Barcelona coastline on sunny days.

Icària island

This island gives its name to the park and the form of its coast is reproduced on the bank of the large lake which runs from the centre of the park to beyond C. Jaume Vicens Vives. Next to the water, the gentle slopes of the grass hills, which make up most of this green area, reach the end of their trail.

Vegetation

On the paths which run around the Plaça dels Campions there are mulberry trees (Morus alba), white pines and stone pines (Pinus halapensis and Pinus pinea) and European fan palms (Chamaerops humilis). The tree vegetation also consists of ombu trees (Phytolacca dioica) and some types of olive trees (Olea europaea) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus sp.). Next to the lake, there are some weeping willows (Salix babylonica) and a large poplar tree (Populus sp.). Washingtonian palms (Washingtonia robusta and Washingtonia filifera) can also be found in this park.

Art and architecture

Five wooden bridges for pedestrians and one for vehicles cross the ring road and connect the city with the park and the sea. They are attractive light structures, especially those of wood which are perfectly integrated into the scenery and add character to the area.

History

Parc de la Nova Icària is, together with the Port Olímpic, Parc de les Cascades, Parc del Poblenou and Parc de Carles I, one of the five large green areas which were built on the old industrial land of Poblenou at the beginning of the 1990s.

Barcelona recovered this land and dedicated part of it to the creation of new green public areas: the Parcs del Litoral. This project formed part of the important urban renovation which was carried out to the coastline of the city in preparation for the Olympic Games of 1992.

Éste es un parque familiar, muy concurrido por la gente a la que los días soleados le gusta pasear por el litoral barcelonés.

Da nombre al parque y la forma de su costa está dibujada en la forma del gran estanque que, desde el centro del parque, se extiende hasta más allá de la calle Jaume Vicens Vives. Cerca del agua, las suaves pendientes de las colinas de césped, grandes protagonistas vegetales de esta zona verde, finalizan su recorrido.

Scots Pine - (Pinaceae).

The genus Pinus (Pines) has leaves (needles) which have shoots with bunches of 2, 3, or 5 leaves, each bunch enclosed in a sheath of papery bracts. The number of needles helps identification, but occasionally there are bunches with a nonstandard number of leaves, so several shoots need to be examined. Cones are mostly more or less egg-shaped (ovoid) with hard, woody scales.

P. sylvestris is probably UK's most common Pine and the only native one (in Scotland). Leaves are in bunches of 2, glaucus, 4-10cm long, broad and with a twist; well branched trunk with orangey-red bark in upper parts; cone scales without prickle on outer face.

"Patula Pine, Pinus patula (Mexican weeping pine, pino llorón in Spanish)(patula Latin = spreading) is a tree native to Mexico. It grows from 24° to 18° North latitude and 1800 to 2700 m above sea level. 30 m tall. It does not stand long periods of temperatures as low as –10°C, but occasionally it resist them and even lower. It is moderately drought tolerant, in this scope is superior than Pinus taeda. Rainfall range is from 750 to 2000 mm annual average, it happens mostly in summer but in a little area of the State of Veracruz on the Sierra Madre Oriental its habitat is rainy year round.

 

"Planted at high altitudes in Ecuador (3500 m), Bolivia, Colombia (3300m), Kenya, Tanzania, Angola, Zimbabwe, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii (3000 m), in Hawaii it is replacing the native alpine grassland. It is cultivated in at lower altitudes than its origin country: Southern Brazil, South Africa, India, and in the Argentine provinces of Córdoba and San Luis[1]it is planted for forestation purposes for creating forest in lands originally covered by bushland. It has been introduced near sea level : New South Wales, Australia, where it spreads naturally by wind and is very favored because rainfalls are more abundant in summer.
