The Hawa Mahal of Jaipur built in 1799, by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, is the most recognizable monument of Jaipur. This is one of the many corridors of Hawa Mahal in typical Rajputana architecture. The 953 perforations on the facade of the Hawa Mahal serve as a breeze-making device for those who stand inside its ramping corridors!

Spring 2022: 6 cities in Rajasthan, India (Mandawa, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaipur)

Jal Mahal (meaning "Water Palace") is a palace located in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur city, the capital of the state of Rajasthan, India. The palace and the lake around it were renovated and enlarged in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber.

The Jal Mahal palace has got an eye-popping makeover. Traditional boat-makers from Vrindavan have crafted the Rajput style wooden boats. A gentle splashing of oars on the clear lake waters takes you to Jal Mahal. You move past decorated hallways and chambers on the first floor to climb all the way up to the fragrant Chameli Bagh. Across the lake, you can view the Aravalli hills, dotted with temples and ancient forts, and on the other side, bustling Jaipur. The most remarkable change is in the lake itself. The drains were diverted, two million tonnes of toxic silt were dredged from the bottom, increasing its depth by over a metre, a water treatment system was developed, local vegetation and fish reintroduced, the surrounding wetlands regenerated and five nesting islands created to attract migratory birds.

Hawa Mahal in Jaipur, also known as the Pink City, is a very important monument of the city. The monument is five stories high and the front of the monument is delicately carved with beautiful motifs. It is an outstanding example of the Rajput style of architecture. Hawa Mahal is not exactly a palace but more like a screen of superbly sculpted windows that look like the front of a palace. The palace was built for the royal ladies of Rajasthan to view the busy city life from inside a veil. The panoramic view of the pyramid shaped palace of winds looks brilliantly magnificent. Blue sky forming the background of this pink sandstone structure makes it appearance mystic and beautiful!

Hawa Mahal is a beautiful palace in Jaipur (Pink City), Rajasthan, also known as the Palace of Winds or Palace of the Breeze, constructed of red and pink sandstone built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh and is a very important structure in the city. The palace is so named because it was mainly a high screen wall built for the women of the royal household so they could observe street festivals while unseen from the outside. The palace is on the edge of the City Palace. This palace is a five-storey pyramidal shaped monument. Seen here are portholes with miniature windows and carved sandstone grills, finials and domes, intricately carved Jharokhas looking so pretty!

Chhatris are elevated, dome-shaped pavilions used as an element in Indian architecture. Chhatris were commonly used to depict the elements of pride and honor in the Rajput architecture of Rajasthan. They are used widely, in palaces, in forts, or to demarcate funerary sites. Chhatris originated in Rajasthani architecture where they were memorials for kings and royalty. Later they were adapted as a standard structure in all buildings in Rajasthan and most importantly in Mughal architecture. These Chhatris in Hawa Mahal in Jaipur are in the interior of the palace. Made of red and pink sandstone they stand tall in the courtyard!

In the days when pedestrians, bikes and rickshaws ruled the roads in Jaipur, this shot captures the elegant Sanganer Gate looking through towards Johari Bazaar.

A visit here a couple of years or so ago revealed the extent to which cars have now taken control of the roads and, how trying to cross them, proved a serious challenge for the novice!
