The double decked road/rail Grafton Bridge over the Clarence River in northern New South Wales was opened in 1932 concurrent with the standard gauge railway line from Sydney to Brisbane. It's a classic bridge of the era but has a bascule, lifting section which was controlled from the little pimple box that hangs off the upstream side and shown in this photo. The bascule feature is no longer used as larger vessels no longer head inland. The bridge also has two sharp bends in the road on the upper deck to allow it to take up its position on and off the bridge above the railway tracks.

The link below gives a good history of both the now two Grafton bridges and other backgrounders to this important and fascinating city.

Fortunately I was so lucky to literally "crash" with these 3 Maiko, near the traditional Theatre in Gion (Kyoto). And they were so kind to let me shot many pictures.

I also had a nice short chat with them. In japanse of course!

-EDIT- They're 2 Maiko and 1 Geiko as kindly suggested by those who came to comment. Thanks to you all, I edited this picture description!

I didn't want any pics of me today... I'm embarrassed and covered in pimples :( This is all you guys get!

Pimples / Rotterdam

My name for it because in roughly five miles it involves climbing St Catherine's Hill, visiting Winchester Cathedral and Abbey House and gardens (built on land once occupied by the Abbey of St Mary and St Edburga), walking through St Faith's Meadow and passing by The Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty. There can be few walks in England which cover such a vast amount of history in just five miles, not to mention an abundance of nature. Come walk with me and help me re-find my hiking feet.

I did this walk earlier last week when I wasn't sure I could manage the hill as well, but then returned two days later and did the walk in reverse so that the hill came first when I felt able to tackle it (only a pimple but sometimes that feels like a mountain) So these photos are taken on two different days but with the same mostly dull and cloudy weather.

The canal is on the St Catherine's Hill side of St Faith's Meadow but here on the other side the path falls between a trickling stream and what is left of the river when the canal has taken water. There is another part of the river flowing through the meadow which joins up later.

Above sheep that are used to graze this part of the meadow, plenty for them to eat but I wonder if they are suited to such long grass........

One of my friends came up on this piece a few months ago. It cost him more then a shiny nickel. It is hand painted on a piece of metal (originally used for print making). I am hoping that when he gets tired of this piece, he will give it to me.

Sing Sing Prison New York Thanksgiving 1972...approximately 14 months later I would attend my first full blown paid concert at the infamous Winterland in San Francisco...a 17 year old pimple faced kid pressed against the stage totally in awe of the artists before me...

Malo, a young latin rock band out of the Mission District with Carlos Santana's brother Jorge on guitar opened followed by Copperhead with John Cippolina on lead guitar...then, the man who would forever be ingrained in my musical appreciation, Freddie King came out and just blew me away...and to close the night out, a young B.B. King tore it up...my poor legs kept saying, "enough already"...but it was all new to me and I was digging every minute of it...

A ever lasting empression on this young hood rat...the 3 guitarists from the top 3 bands on the bill have all left us but are still fresh in my mind...

So, once I was diagnosed with lukemia, I just knew I needed to compose a bucket list of places and things I've always wanted to see and do and right at the top was a musical adventure through 'south america', home of the Blues...

The Monumento a la Revolución is a building of the 30s that commemorates the Mexican Revolution of 1910. It seemed to me, forgive the comparison, a... little Défense before its time.

Around the monument there is a big square with a fountain, which periodically activates water sprays from the floor.

Hence, it has become one of the preferred teen haunts. Alone, as a couple, with their company, they wait for the activation of the fountain and when the sprays finish, they relax on the pavement to dry clothes or wait for the next round ...

Posted for interest and a record, not for photogenic quality. This was one of the fungi I photographed when a group of us went to West Bragg Creek on 3 September 2016, to search for mushroom species. Afterwards, I got an e-mail asking if any of us had photographed this particular fungus, as it turns out that it was quite interesting. "This mushroom, looking like it is covered with algae, is a brother of the Lobster mushroom, thus a parasite; this one is Hypomyces luteovirens, Green Mushroom Pimple". Not sure I would have photographed it if I had found it somewhere on my own, and I wouldn't have pulled it : ) As it was, I rather reluctantly photographed it, as it really didn't look photogenic to me at all. Any confirmation or correction of ID would be greatly appreciated - thanks! If you look at this image in the larger size, you can see all the tiny green "pimples", if you are in the mood for looking at green pimples, ha.

"Fruit body a white then olive-green to dark green mold which produces dark green perithecia that project as small pimples. The mold covers the gills and stalk of lactarius and russula mushrooms. Habitat in woods on various species of russula and lactarius mushrooms. Common in wet weather wherever the host species are found, throughout many parts of North America."

www.rogersmushrooms.com/gallery/DisplayBlock~bid~6208.asp

"This species of Hypomyces is a parasite on various species of Russula. It is easily recognized by its yellow-green color. It seems less avid about its parasitism than some species of Hypomyces, and tends to cover only the upper stem and gills of the host mushroom, leaving it fairly recognizable. Parasitic on various species of Russula, which have diverse habitats; widely distributed in North America. Fruit Body is a powdery, mold-like covering over the gills and stem of the host; yellow to yellowish green." From MushroomExpert.com., which is an excellent website.

On 3 September 2016, we had a fungi morning, which was quite rewarding and definitely fun. Our leader and friend, Karel, is very knowledgeable about fungi and he took 14 of us (plus Karel's two beautiful Beagles) on a foray to West Bragg Creek, maybe an hour's drive west of the city. We had been here a few times over the years, either looking for fungi or on botany outings.

Photographing our findings usually means that I am way at the back of the group or have fallen back with a friend or two. Consequently, the mushrooms have often already been plucked/cut by the time we catch up to the rest of the participants. I also miss a lot of what is being said about IDs and details. It would take far too long to write down the name of each find - each photo taken would have to be carefully numbered so that the right name could be attached and this would be such a hassle when out with a group. Since this outing, Karel has sent an email containing several photos along with IDs. The rest of my photos will have to be just nameless 'pretty pictures' : ) I must add here that any IDs that I give are always tentative. Another thing to add is that I never, ever pick and eat wild mushrooms!! Too many look similar, some edible, others poisonous. If you are not a fungi expert, never take the risk of eating any of them.

I met up with friend, Sandy, at 8:15 am and she drove us out to the meeting place. Our morning walk started off by going across the small bridge not far from the parking lot, then part way up the hill and then bush-whacking our way through the forest. This walk, which ended around lunch time, was the main one, but we did stop at a small, gravel parking area a few minutes along the main road, to do a second walk to check for any different mushrooms. This extra walk has yielded a few beauties in past years. Perhaps the most interesting find was a very small twig that had several tiny, turquoise coloured fungi cups on it. The colour looks so out of place in a natural area. My photos of them did not turn out very well, but I did post one of them recently, just for the very unusual colour.

From here, a few of us stopped at the Cinnamon Spoon cafe in Bragg Creek for lunch. Always a most enjoyable way to finish any outing. Before we climbed into the car for our return drive to Calgary, Sandy and I wandered into the beautiful Art Gallery next door but one, owned and run by Bob and Candy Cook. Named Branded Visuals Inc.(Printing Services/Wildlife Gallery), this small store is overflowing with Bob's absolutely amazing photographic works of art. Thanks so much, Bob and Candy, for remembering our chance meeting a number of years ago, down in Fish Creek Park, and for your overly generous words about my own photography.

Thanks so much, Karel, for giving us a great morning! We really appreciate your passing on your knowledge to us. The same thanks go to Suzanne, the mushroom specialist in Calgary. Sandy, really appreciate the ride there and back!

Spring is beautiful! Day by day is more green around and more flowers are blooming :)

Anemone hepatica or common hepatica (Hepatica nobilis) is a herbaceous perennial growing from a rhizome in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), native to woodland in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It is found in the woods, thickets and meadows, especially in the mountains of continental Europe. In many countries Anemone hepatica is grown as an ornamental plant, where it is appreciated because of effective flowers and early blooming. It is used in rock gardens or in forest-based parks. Medieval herbalists believed it could be used to treat liver diseases, and is still used in alternative medicine today. Other modern applications by herbalists include treatments for pimples, bronchitis and gout.

Nie ma to jak wiosna! Z każdym dniem jest bardziej zielono i coraz więcej kwiatów rozkwita :)

Przylaszczka pospolita (Hepatica nobilis) – gatunek rośliny wieloletniej z rodziny jaskrowatych.

So there is third way, apparently - at a cost of having a strip added on top. What do you think?

Ok, so I am toying with an Star Destroyer, and regardless of final scale, there is a problem to solve: proportions.

On the right you have outlines or properly scaled ship - in fact the very model used to film movie shots, and both of my versions pasted for comparision. The right one has ugly studs, but is much more similar to the original in shape, and then the left one is overall nicier but it really seems too narrow.

Which option would you chose?

- Kom Se Pimple -

There are only a couple of spots (that I know of) where I could stand on the ground and take a photo looking out over the Knysna forest towards the sunset. I'm either in the forest or I'm out of it. I'm very seldom above it.

I recently captured this photo in the Gouna forest, from the highest point along "Kom Se Pad". This hill is referred to by most locals as "The Pimple". I've literally taken dozens of photos from this exact same spot, but this is my favourite composition from all of those moments.

There is only one company in Knysna offering chartered helicopter flights, but they do seem to be restricted from flying over SANParks territory, so I can understand why they've been ignoring my requests for a chartered flight? The money isn't an issue, but there might be other issues that could somehow be resolved? Are you hearing any of this Duran?

Would anyone else perhaps fly me (and my camera) over this forest? Please DM me if you can provide what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance.

Every pore, pimple, bump, lines in my hands, scars on my face, bags under my eyes, every hair follicle gray and black morphs into a DNA road map of my life. You can pull out my GPS if you like, and study it to find out where I’ve been, where I am and also where I’m headed. Am I that old man contemplating my final steps of my journey? There were a number of these phyllidiella nudibranchs (there are several species) like this pimpled phyllidiella. They were so common, found in groups of 2's and 3's, that I eventually stopped shooting them.

The King Vulture (Sarcoramphus Papa) is the most strikingly colored of the New World vultures.

It is native to tropical lowland forests; its range extends from southern Mexico to southern Argentina, and it can be found at heights up to up to 1200 m.

The King Vulture has a yellow fleshy crest (wattle) on its bill, and the bare skin of its head is yellow and red. Its plumage is black and grey, but it has pink and yellow tinges. The eyes are straw-coloured in the adult. It is about 80 cm long.

In terms of behavior, King Vultures are typical vultures. They feed on carrion, and soar looking for prey, but may also use olfaction to help locate it. At a carcass, the King Vulture is dominant over other species, but its greater strength means that it will often open carcasses that others are then able to exploit.
