The low-angle light of late afternoon on a winter's day splashes brightly on the red-rock fins comprising the Devil's Garden, Arches National Park, Utah. In the distance, freshly fallen snow coats the La Sal Mountains.
I have walked this trail many times, and I hope to walk it many more. Visiting this particular place and taking in this view has become a pilgrimage of sorts. I find it most arresting in winter, as the combination of snow, red rock, and rich light makes the spirit buoyant and the mind rooted to the present. It is also difficult to comprehend that our family walked this route when our boys were tiny, and now the oldest is about to finish his senior year and venture out to college in 2023. At times, thoughts like these overwhelm me with maudlin sentimentality, though I am grateful for all of it. With this light, I raise a metaphorical glass and a toast to the new year: may its twists and turns be rich with unexpected adventure, and may our sorrows and griefs keen only because we are filled with love.
Happy new year!

Anybody who visits Sydney and has an interest in photography must make the pilgrimage to Circular Quay to get the obligatory photo of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Here's my humble attempt.

The day we left Burgos was the first day when it was not only cold but foggy, too. It took a while to leave the city and then it was a long walk to Tardajos, where we could recharge ourselves with some clara (beer mixed with lemon fizz).
In a pilgrimage, the music takes over the place, people sing in the midst of their fight for housing.
An innocent look stands out to everyone and everything
Em uma romaria, a musica toma conta do ambiente, as pessoas cantam em meio a sua luta por moradia.
Um olhar inocente se sobressai a tudo e todos
There's not a lot of understorey in the Japanese Cedar forests of the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Trail. Wakayama Prefecture, Japan.
It's pretty dark under the canopy and the plants that do grow on the forest floor tend to be small. I'm not sure what this particular plant is sorry, looks willow-ish!

In the south of Spain (Andalusia) there is a tradition that every year, in the month of May, some groups of people made up of families, friends or associations, make a pilgrimage to a town called "El Rocío", where there is a image of the Virgin of Rocio, highly venerated in this area. Previously, the pilgrimage used to be made in wooden carts pulled by horses. Currently they have been modernized and the treap is done in caravans, with certain comforts, pulled by tractors. The pilgrimage lasts about one week, depending on the distance, and upon reaching the town of El Rocío, the weekend are the most important religious acts. Everything ends on Monday, with a procession.
It is a mixture of religion, folklore, party and superstition. Many people are dressed in flamenco costume, and the different groups (brotherhoods) meet frequently to eat, drink and sing. The following images correspond to the departure of about 60 caravans from Granada, Spain, to the town "El Rocío"
Although Santiago de Compostela is roughly 2.200 km away there is a pilgrim's way in the heathland called "Pilgrim's Way Jacobus Way Lueneburger heath land" ("Jacobusweg Lüneburger Heide"). This picture was taken somewhere along leg 10.
Unfortunately the website is just in German but I thought I'd share it anyway as there's a map as well :o)

Mount Fiji, the highest mountain of Japan has been a symbol of worship for many Japanese for its dignified shape and pure beauty. Many people climbed up to the top to offer their prayer for their health and prosperity for ages. For those who tried to reach the top, many routes were developed and lodging inns were built, and for those who could not climb up the steep and high mountain, many temples and shrines were built along the routes at the foot of the mountain. The mountain and its surrounding remains/buildings are now preserved under the designation of the UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage in 2017.
Walking around the old town in Santiago. Loving this city, my city.
An essence that could perhaps be summarized as a magical aura that follows you wherever you go among towns lost among hydrangeas, beaches of Caribbean waters with tongues of white sand, churches, monasteries of hermit monks that lie semi-hidden among weeds and many magical legends...
