Scheffel Hall was built in a part of Manhattan known as Kleindeutschland ("Little Germany"), with a high population of German immigrants in the area. Named after German poet and author Joseph Viktor von Scheffel, it was originally a beer hall and restaurant, in 1904 it became a restaurant, Allaire's, then a rathskeller (cellar bar), before becoming a jazz club, and more recently a pilates studio.
