Francesco Albani (Bologna, August 17, 1578 - Bologna, October 4, 1660) - Salmacide embraces Ermafrodito (ca. 1633) - oil on canvas 183× 228 cm.- Galleria Sabauda, Turin
The story of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus is told by Ovid in the Metamorphoses. It is not clear whether Ovid merely recounts a pre-existing Greek myth or adds elements of his own invention. In his account, however, Salmacis was the nymph of a fountain in the Anatolian region of Caria. When Hermaphroditus came to the fountain, Salmacis fell in love with him and embraced him, asking the gods if she could stay with him forever. The gods granted his request by uniting Hermaphrodite and Salmacis in a single body. Hermaphroditus cursed the source of Salmacis, demanding that anyone who bathed in its waters would have to share his destiny.
