World Giraffe Day - World Giraffe Day is an annual event initiated by GCF (Giraffe Conservation Foundation) to celebrate the tallest animal on the longest day or night (depending on which hemisphere you live!) of the year – 21 June – it happens every year!
These 3 are Masai Giraffes - - the most common of the 3 types of giraffes found in Kenya.

This fellow is actually just finishing off a yawn but it looks great - - South Africa 2017, on the outskirts of Kruger park.

This is a female Madagascar Magpie-Robin; she is brownand buff while her male counterpart is bluish-black and white. They are robin like with a longer tail.
This is a fairly common Madagascar endemic which is found in underside of many bush types.

A common bird in many parts of the world - - including Madagascar - - the Cattle Egret.
This is a breeding bird showing its reddish-pink bill which is the colors found on Cattle Egrets in Europe, Africa and the Americas. Cattle Egrets in Asia and Australia would show a yellowish bill.

Here is the female Souimanga Sunbird - - not nearly as colorful as here male counterpart but still a beautiful bird to encounter - - I actually saw a lot more males than females which I thought I was unusual.
Very active birds so it was nice to see her take a break for a second on this perch.

I recently returned from a 2-week phototour of the Lofoten Islands, which are located north of the Arctic Circle in Norway. The highlight of the trip was our final night there, when we were finally blessed with a clear sky and an amazing showing of the northern lights (aurealis borealis).
Over the coming weeks I will post more photos from this spectacular trip.
Something a little different for Earth Day. A beautiful country going through many uncertain times for its natural beauty and resources - - many political issues impacting the future of its ecology.
A landscape from Madagascar - - after seeing so much rain forest / dry forest / spiny forest and rolling hillsides it was a pleasant surprise to see this dramatic red sand canyon on the border of the Ankarafantsika National Park.

Here is the only Coua with a crest, but like all other coua's it does have some colorful bare skin patches around its eye.
The Crested Coua is a tree dwelling bird that hops from tree to tree and rarely flys.

Even though there is alot of similarities to other coua's - this is the Giant Coua which we managed to find while walking the trails in the Berenty Reserve of south east Madagascar.
This bird is recognizable due to its much larger size and rufous belly. It is a bird that likes to walk the dry forest floor.

A grizzly looking for lunch since many salmon are washing up onto the riverbanks and getting caught along the fallen trees.

This was our 1 sighting of a Madagascar Pratincole - - it is a bird that appears to be halfway between a tern and a shorebird, but it mostly nests along rocky rivers.
This shot was taken while we were standing on a bridge looking out over a river, we just happened to spot this guy out on the rocky river bank - - so I moved down lower off the end of the bridge - - heavy crop to get in this close - - but I knew it was unlikely that we would see this fellow again.

Here is a female Rufous Vanga - - the male has a black hood while the female has a black cap and white throat. They are a mid-sized vanga found in both dry forest and rain forest. This encounter was in the dry forest.

Not a great picture since its a 100% crop but its a new bird for me and so it at least proves I saw one - - a Madagascar Green Pigeon.
We only saw a couple and they were always at great distance - - they were typically found near fruit sources since fruit is their primary food source.
