Ponce de Leon claimed Florida for Spain in 1513. (Christopher Columbus discovered North America in 1492 but actually landed in the Bahamas). Other Spanish explorers later found gold and silver in Mexico and Peru. The treasure was sent back to Spain in ships sailing in the Gulf Stream. Spanish settlements needed to be built in Florida to protect the Spanish Treasure fleets. King Phillip II of Spain sent Pedro Menendez to settle in Florida and drive out French garrisons recently established there. In September 1565, Pedro Menendez with 700 soldiers and colonists landed 'here' and founded St. Augustine making it the oldest continually occupied European settlement in North America ~ Saint Augustine Inlet

I was very pleased to have my recent Cuckoo chosen by BirdGuides as their Photo of the Week. www.birdguides.com/articles/photo-of-the-week/photo-of-th... Amazingly this is the second time this year that one of my photos has achieved this.

Their write-up said "With the apparent passing of 'Colin', the famous Common Cuckoo of Thursley Common, Surrey, that has entertained hundreds of birders and photographers over the past eight years and featured many times in the BirdGuides gallery, there has been a real lack of close-up shots of this species so far this spring. Step forward Tim Melling, who took this superb image of a flying cuckoo in West Yorkshire last week.

Captured in great light, with the bird flying 'towards' the photographer, has made for a truly arresting capture. This 'head-on' angle highlights the remarkable yellow eye of this species, while the slight blur towards the wing-tips adds to the impact of the photo. Many birders will have had close encounters with this species at times, but such sightings are usually very brief as the bird zooms by at speed – Tim has therefore done especially well to nail this encounter." Don’t tell me there not eyes 💕

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

My last picture for 2015's 52 project. Thanks for all the comments, faves and support all year since the first week. I'm probably not going to do another themed 52 in 2016 (good luck to those who are) but will hopefully do another 100x. I'm not ready for another 365/366. (Once was enough in 2013!)

No Flashy group invites please - I have my groups that I post to ...

The clouds were looking ominous last night, long after the sun went down. I was out with my daughter, she with her new camera and I with mine. It is so much fun with her and we caught some very interesting light on the north side of the reservoir. There was an unnerving calm when a sudden wind came up and a sky that was cause for people to run for cover.

*************************************************************

The American alligator is a large crocodilian reptile endemic to the southeastern United States. Adult male American alligators measure 11 to 15 ft in length and can weigh up to 999 lbs. Females are smaller measuring around 9.8 ft. The American alligator inhabits freshwater wetlands such as marshes and cypress swamps from Texas to North Carolina. It is distinguished from the sympatric American crocodile by its broader snout, with overlapping jaws and darker coloration, and is less tolerant of saltwater but more tolerant of cooler climates than the American crocodile, which is found only in tropical climates.

Alligators are apex predators and consume fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Subsequent conservation efforts have allowed their numbers to increase and the species was removed from the endangered species list in 1987. The species is the official state reptile of three states: Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi U.S.A.

THE BIG PICTURE

SPRING RUN

The first calves of the season are already arriving on Manitoba farms. This pair was born near Deerwood on Feb. 29th.

The sunset in Dresden was just amazing. You definitely need to see this yourself! The old buildings get that indescribable which sets you back in older times.

Sunsets over the frozen bay are just something else

Happy New Year! First photo for 2015, and a new 52 week project. This is a shot of the late afternoon January sunshine while walking near Stenner Woods and Fletcher Moss Gardens in Didsbury, Manchester.

Good luck with whatever your photographic plans are for this year! I'm doing a 52 again as you can see - and maybe another 100x, still deciding that... I'm not yet ready for another 365 :-) but am very impressed with those of my contacts who are doing one this year.

My intention for the year is for more photography - so more light!!
