Westminster Bridge is probably the premier location in London for light trails bearing in mind the backdrop. My buddy for the night Noel Hannan and I stood there for some time waiting for a London Bus to come along so we could trip our shutters. As you might expect there was nothing for an age then two came along at once!
My intention was to produce an hdr of the scene and try and capture a separate light trail to merge with it later. For various reasons this proved to be somewhat hit and miss or rather miss altogether. I resorted to using the long single exposure and creating a pseudo hdr from it in adobe camera raw & photoshop. This is the result. I've got to say I spent an age messing around with the image: this is the sixth version I came up with! I'm still not entirely happy with it but my skills will have to improve before the image does :-)
Tripod mounted hdr created off a single raw shot +3 to -3 in 1ev steps. PP in acr, photomatix and photoshop with various topaz plugins. Nikon D700 with Nikon 24-70 f 2.8 @ 27mm, f11, ISO 100, exposure 4 seconds.
The Queen Elizabeth II Great Court is a covered square at the centre of the British Museum. It was designed by the engineers Buro Happold and the architects Foster and Partners. The Great Court opened in December 2000 and is the largest covered square in Europe. The roof is a glass and steel construction, built by an Austrian steelwork company with 1,656 uniquely shaped panes of glass. At the centre of the Great Court is the Reading Room vacated by the British Library, its functions now moved to St Pancras. The Reading Room is open to any member of the public who wishes to read there.
The museum is dedicated to human history and culture. Its permanent collection, numbering some 8 million works, is among the largest and most comprehensive in existence and originates from all continents, illustrating and documenting the story of human culture from its beginnings to the present.
7 exposure, handheld hdr +3 to -3. Post via adobe camera raw, photomatix, and photoshop with various topaz plugins. Nikon D700 with 16-35 f4 @ 16mm, f6.3, exposure 1/60-1/2000 sec, ISO 800.
As I prepare for this years #Photo24London event it seemed apt that I interupt my Norfolk shots and upload this alternative versions of one of my favourite shots from last years event. Given the less than brilliant weather forecast I suspect this tunnel under Kings Cross might be somewhere I return too this year........

The Houses of Parliament, Elizabeth Tower, (Big Ben) and Westminster Bridge caught just after the days sunlight had drained from the sky. The flood lighting and bridge lamps had just come on and had subtly changed the scene in front of us. See my previous shots ' 9.55' and 'Westminster' for additional info.
7 exposure, tripod mounted hdr +3 to -3. Post via adobe camera raw, photomatix, and photoshop with various topaz plugins. A slight vignette was added on completion. Nikon D700 with 24-70 f2.8 @ 50mm, f8, average exposure 1/10 sec, ISO 200.

Some bokeh-tastic fun and games on the Advanced Photographer 24 hour photo walk in London.
One of the giant lifting machines that make up one of the largest movable flood barriers in the world. Taken just before dawn, one a morning with very little colour or texture in the sky.

It's already becoming difficult to take a shot of this that looks a bit different, but I thought I'd head over to Canary Wharf on a Saturday night and give it a go whilst out on the Advanced Photographer 24 hour London photo walk.
My last shot before I 'go dark' for #Photo24London..... Taken last weekend on a bit of a 'recce' this is one of three great stairs in the Caruso St John Architects designed Newport Street Gallery.

From Wikipedia : "In 2010, Hirst was among the unsuccessful bidders to take over the Magazine Building, a 19th-century structure in Kensington Gardens, which reopened in 2013 as the Serpentine Sackler Gallery after its conversion by Zaha Hadid. In March 2012, he outlined plans to open a gallery in Vauxhall, London specifically designed to exhibit his personal collection, which includes five pieces by Francis Bacon. Located in a former theater carpentry and scenery production workshops redesigned by Caruso St John, the space runs the length of Newport Street in Vauxhall and will include six galleries, office space and a restaurant. It is due to open in October 2015.
Commenting on his collection, Hirst has said "As a human being, as you go through life, you just do collect. It was that sort of entropic collecting that I found myself interested in, just amassing stuff while you’re alive.""

Party time in the capital. A painterly light show reflected in the River Thames, looking towards the unmistakable dome above St.Pauls Cathedral
Just to finish this trilogy of shots here's one from directly beneath the structure. It really is a spectacular bridge to photograph at night with all that neon blue lighting and the background of the north bank of the Thames. I suppose the only thing you can't see is St Paul's but then again you can't have it all.
7 exposure, tripod mounted, long exposure hdr with pp in acr, photoshop, photomatix, topaz clarity and de-noise.
A shot taken a couple of weeks ago of the Herzog & de Meuron Blavatnik School of Government in Jericho, Oxford.
Time for a new super-wide zoom lens I think as this one is also showing some softness on the lefthand side of the frame again. I think it may have taken a knock.......
Has anyone got any suggestions for a replacement to my ageing Tamron 11-17mm lense ? I guess I really need to get something before I head off to #Photo24London in a few weeks time.

Light trails are certainly not everyones cup of tea, and often seen as gimmicky. But as I'm going through an experimental phase, and given the opportunity of a London Landmark with a profile as big as St. Paul's Cathedral, I gave it a go.

There are a couple of spiral staircases at the Tate Modern. Although they're quiet expansive they don't consist of much "spiral", unfortunately. They're also quite difficult to get a shot of without a wide angle lens.
I've started to put together a map of spiral staircases in London. If you look at this Google Map you can see the one's I'm aware of. If you've got any that you know of that aren't on the map and you like them added then send me a Flickr mail with the details and I'll add it.
Looking up the marvellous Brewer Staircase within the depths of the Heals Department store.
Another shot that took an age to compose within the restrictions of my 16mm wide angle lens.
This new light tunnel at Kings Cross Station has been on my 'list' for a while so I was glad to get there during this years #Photo24London event. Despite being mid-afternoon it was mostly deserted but there were just enough people around to add interest to the space.
I've less than 12 hours to upload shots to the Competition groups so I'm going to uploading quite a few between now and 6pm.
From a Kings Cross Press Release : "A new tunnel, with integrated light wall, opened yesterday at King’s Cross. The 90m long tunnel, which has a LED integrated light-wall running its entire length, was designed by Speirs + Major and delivered by The Light Lab. The tunnel itself has been designed by architects Allies & Morrison and links St Pancras International and King’s Cross St Pancras Underground stations to the new public spaces, restaurants, offices and homes at King’s Cross.
Commuters were treated to something a little different on Monday morning, as the tunnel was open to the public, with commuters able to enjoy the debut light installation called Pipette. The dedicated art work on display was created by Miriam Sleeman (The Cross Kings) and Tom Sloan (Tom Sloan Design) and is designed to evoke the colourful tapestry of King’s Cross through a tranquil yet animated design."

Escaping the hottest part of the day during Photo24London. I had a feeling the shadows caused by the geometric shapes in the glass canopy would only add to this scene inside the British Museum (London).
I took part in Photo 24 2018, this time sponsored by Fuji on 29th and 30th July. Approx. 300 odd photographers from all over the country descended on London on a Friday afternoon with the intention of spending 24 hours photographing the capital. I finally headed off home on Sat morning having spent all night wandering around my usual haunts. This is one of my favourites. If you look back through my stream you’ll see various shots of the bridge that I took at previous Photo 24 events.
The Millennium Bridge was opened in June 2002. It’s an architectural marvel which resembles a dinosaur skeleton when viewed at this angle. It was shut almost immediately after an unexpected swaying motion set in when participants of a charity walk tried to open it. Londoners nicknamed it the 'wobbly bridge'. It didn't re-open for a further two years while modifications were made to eliminate the problem, (huge steel dampers were added to the structure).
The bridge crosses the Thames in front of St Paul's Cathedral and was the subject of a competition organised by Southwark Council & RIBA Competitions. The winning entry was an innovative "blade of light" effort from Arup, Foster & Partners and Sir Anthony Caro.
7 shot, tripod supported, hdr (+3 to -3) with pp in acr, photoshop, topaz clarity, & topaz de-noise. Fuji X-T2 with Fuji 55-200 f3.5-4.8 @ 58mm, f6.4, ISO 320, average exposure 3.5 sec's.
Finishing back where I started with my #Photo24London uploads five weeks ago, I thought I'd try an off centre square format crop of this shot of the wonderful spiral stair in Heals Store, Tottenham Court Road. The cropping seems (to me anyway.....) to increase the rotation in the shot adding to the vertiginous viewpoint.

I previously uploaded the colour version of this view over London from the Shard a few years ago, I've pulled this mono version from my 'Rainy day' set as I'll be returning to the Shard in a couple of weeks time as part of #Photo24London.
Fingers crossed the weather is good because at that height you could easily be in the cloud......

This afternoon I've had to finalise my submissions for the #Photo24London competitions. I entered the shot below below as one of my 'Best overall images' but now I'm kicking myself that maybe I should've entered this sq crop as it's 'purer'.

The Leadenhall Building in the City of London. I loved the way the arrows pointed skywards. This image has already been compared to a colourful pinball table and I'm inclined to agree.

Looks like someone worked their way through the 99 bottles of beer :-)
It's been a while since I posted a flip shot, this one of More London is too surreal to be convincing but hopefully some of you will still find it interesting.

Yep, it's "that tunnel" again, but this time from the outside. If you're thinking off popping down to Canary Wharf to photograph it then I recommend any time after 8pm on a Saturday as it's quiet enough to get photos with nobody in them, but there's also enough people to get some with them in, if you know what I mean!
Reminiscent of a mini Manhattan, the ever changing skyline of the Docklands development looks twice as nice with near perfect reflections in the basin below.
Happy New Year folks...
What better way to cool down on a blisteringly hot summer day than to run through the fountains at Kings Cross

June 20/21 was the Advanced Photographer 24 hour London photo walk. I decided to take advantage of the quiet London streets to do some nighttime Brenizer method photos. This is a 20 shot merge giving an effective lens of 24mm at f/0.9.
A somewhat dark and moody shot of the London Eye, taken close to sunset during #Photo24London. About two years I bought a variable ND fader filter, this was the first time I'd got around to using it. Here it gave me a 30 second exposure, hence the blurred pods.

A somewhat subdued shot of Westminster across the Thames but I like the soft lighting and muted colours. Taken at dawn during this years #Photo24London event, you can just about make out it was 4.45am when I took this.......

June 20/21 was the Advanced Photographer 24 hour London photo walk.
After catching up for a coffee at the Nikon school at 2am I had a wander around the back streets of Oxford Street and found some bikes and nobody around, so I took a 35 shot Brenizer method panorama which came out with an effective lens of 25mm at f/0.9.
List is the first Brenizer method shot I've merged using the new panorama option in Lightroom 6. It spent a big of time chewing on the 35 files and ate up most of the 16GB on my PC, but eventually spat out the file. Interestingly it's very quick to generate a preview - it's the actual rendering when you click "OK" that takes the time.
One of my intentions for this years Advanced Photographer / Nikon #Photo24London event was to get some shots of Tower Bridge exactly like this one.......
For this shot I put the tripod as low as it would go to make the most of the 11mm lens I was using. The verticals aren't straight but that was never my intention.
Recently announced as winner of the 'Iconic London' category of the Nikon Photo24 competition.

Some might say this isn't sufficiently different to my previous upload to warrant uploading but I think the zoom blur and vignette transform the photo into something with a bit more of an emotional impact. Now it looks like you're rushing down the stairs (or up ?) either desperately late or even trying to evade something.

From the TfL website : "The new service has been made possible thanks to the continued modernisation of significant parts of the Underground network and improved levels of reliability. Independent research into the economic benefits of the Night Tube found that the new service will boost jobs and help maintain London's status as a vibrant and exciting place to live, work and visit.
The Night Tube will cut night-time journeys by an average of 20 minutes, with some cut by more than an hour. It will also play a vital role in opening up London's night-time economy, supporting almost 2,000 permanent jobs and boosting the economy by £360m.
Demand for a 24-hour Tube service is clear - late night Tube use has increased at double the rate of day-time trips and Night bus usage has risen by 173% since 2000. There are already over half a million users of the Tube after 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays."

June 17th was the London Photo 24 walk, organized by Advanced Photographer magazine. It was also the opening day of the Tate Modern extension, called Switch House, which is destined to become a must visit location for any London photographers.
