The Philosophy bit:
Life in rural Poland has its problems, and combine that with the 'can't do, won't do, where's my cutlet?' attitude prevalent here in the east, change is still a long time coming for many. However, the basic issue affects all our lives, no matter where we live, because we are taught that tradition is better, in fact it is hammered into us in so many ways in education and our upbringing. So much so we, in the end, lose the edge that made the preservation of tradition. And without that edge, there is only eventual death of society, with financial crash being followed by financial crash, each time exiting with less people making things.
The Story bit:
We travel around, looking at stuff, for wifie it is an escape while for me an opportunity to gather snapshots on how people live their lives and why. The location of this shot was not all that far from our home city of Lublin, Poland, outside a department store in the countryside, of a typical design for the 1970s Soviet era. The raised ground level was part of a newly added slope for wheelchairs/prams, sadly no one thought to chase the phone company.
I now have a version of this image to buy, which you can find at: www.photo4me.com/cart/details.asp?PictureID=240363. It is available on paper, canvas, or phonecase.
Forget-me-not on the riverbank. These are the footprints of Lutra lutra, the European Otter, our native species here in the UK. Sadly I have never seen one, footprints may be as close as I ever get to this elusive creature.
I'm so fed up with scraping mud out of my house that I intend to replace the furnishings to co-ordinate with it. You can now have mud on anything or EVERYTHING and no need to clean up! It's going to save a bunch of time.
