In the 90's Jean Grey had two significant costumes. Her Jim Lee designed Yellow and Blue early 90's outfit and the Green and Gold Phoenix outfit she eventually began to wear.
For a significant period during the 90's Jean had no codename, choosing instead to use her full name. Later, she adopted the moniker 'Phoenix' partially because she was asked to by her alternate timeline future daughter and to take ownership of the name and turn it into something that was good, something that people (and her husband Scott) wouldn't be afraid of.
She would later adopt the costume as well and wear the outfit that made her image famous and feared throughout the galaxy.
"I don't want you to get hurt, but you have to understand: the more you annoy me the more I can't help thinking about deconstructing you, molecule by molecule, memory by memory ... until there's nothing left but screaming, traumatized atoms."

I based this on the April Fool's Day cover of Squirrel Girl possessed by the Phoenix Force. (Bringing "unbeatable Squirrel Girl" to a new level.) And Phoenix Force Tippy-Toe is looking pretty fierce!

My costume lineup for 2016: Bunny Raven (for the Bunny Hutch); Lady Blackhawk; Gadget from Rescue Rangers; Squirrel Girl Phoenix.
Okay, so that last one on the end wasn't really a costume, but it makes for a cute evolution. :) By Sunday evening the corset was killing me so it was easier to run to the room and just leave the makeup on. I'd say I was smart for bringing the outfit along but the same thing happened last year. At least I'm consistent!
"We come into this world alone and we leave the same way. The time we spent in between - time spent alive, sharing, learning together ... is all that makes life worth living."

Here's one of the original cover paintings by Gil Cohen featured in our new book ONE MAN ARMY: THE ACTION PAPERBACK ART OF GIL COHEN (on Amazon here-> amzn.to/2UoS4ug). It's a "wraparound" cover painting that spanned the front and back covers of Super Phoenix Force #1: FIRE STORM (1988). ONE MAN ARMY is also available directly from me with free shipping via my eBay listings as SubtropicBob (bit.ly/SubtropicBob).
Here's a good look at the costume which I wore at Awesome Con. I was relieved that people got the joke!
Tippy-Toe is looking a little distracted, there. Squirrel Girl imbued with the power of the Phoenix Force gives me pause, but the thought of Tippy-Toe wielding such power gives me the jeebies.
I wish we'd thought to get a picture of the two of us attacking Doctor Doom, but there was a really funny moment when Doom rounded the corner and saw two Squirrel Girls standing there!
"Her power is a song within her...A passion beyond human comprehension. She is more alive than she has ever been."
