Gloucester Pharmacy (5,600 square feet)

7453 Hargett Boulevard, Walter Reed Plaza, Gloucester, VA

Opened September 1st, 1998; pictured portion originally No. 1 (January 1998-October 30th, 2008)

Getting a prescription processed is becoming very convoluted. This is Knowle Pharmacy where the staff are helpful but have to deal with the volume of work involved. The communication between the GDP practice and the pharmacy is not a robust one. You have to exercise resilience to work through the administration involved.

The left wall of the store was home to the pharmacy, which only had a few days left when I took these pictures. The front left corner held the liquor and floral departments.

The aisles on this end of the store (past the frozen food section) originally ran perpendicular to the ones in the rest of the store. They were rearranged in the circa-2008 remodel.

This store opened during the '70s at some point and will be closing in January 2015. It is set to be replaced by a relocated Dick's Sporting Goods come summer 2015.

Traditional Chinese pharmacy, Bangkok

Like much of old Bangkok, Chinese pharmacies that once were the main source of general medical advice, are disappearing fast. This particular pharmacy has been in the family for several generations but perhaps not for much longer. It is remarkably well stocked, with a charming air of organized chaos, and a distinctly Thai feel.

This is part of a series documenting the changes to my neighbourhood in Bangkok - an area I first visited in 1988

This store calls itself a pharmacy, and there is a pharmacy in one corner. It would more accurately be called a "general store" since it carries a little of almost everything including witches.

Cool signage on the wall at the pharmacy waiting area of the now former Exeter Rd. Kroger in Germantown TN. Daniel got a photo somewhat similar to this one just a day before the store officially closed (flic.kr/p/wfoCwn), and started it's limited, 3 day "inventory reduction" sale. Yeah, Kroger really hates using the word "closing" sometimes, although they didn't have any qualms about throwing that word down on the American Way store when the time came!

CVS Pharmacy

6417 W Higgins Ave.

Chicago, IL 60656

I think this was originally a grocery store (Jewel possibly?) but when CVS took over they could have replaced this with their standard, modern sign (plexiglass light box over LED marquee).

So, you have to give them credit for preserving the perfect Googie geometry of this massive sign. Its swooping, optiimistic curves preside over the neighborhood with grinning grandure.

This location was built and opened in 1999. The site originally housed a Ukrop's, which opened on May 12th, 1965.

This independent pharmacy was purchased by its current owner 30 years ago and is still going strong. A rarity these days...nice to see it is succeeding.

The pharmacy was closing surprisingly shortly after the store closure was announced.

I'm guessing this was the original location of the pharmacy, prior to the remodel. I didn't check, but there's very likely a pharmacy walk-up window on the front of the building as well. Add in the remote kiosk in the parking lot, and about the only thing that's lacking is rooftop pickup!

Promotional photo of Clark's Pharmacy taken for the Belding High School yearbook in 1963. That is my grandfather, the owner, behind the counter. He earned a business degree from Bryant Stratton College and a pharmacy degree from Ferris State College. After graduating in 1937, my grandfather borrowed money from his parents to open his own business, choosing the small town of Belding, Michigan. Mr. Clark soon earned a reputation for his strong work ethic and impeccable customer service. You could call him in the middle of the night and he would go downtown, open the store and fill a prescription for you. You would always be greeted by name and a sincere smile along with expert product recommendations. This level of personal service and dedication gave Clark's a very loyal customer base.

Probably the best remembered part of Clark's Pharmacy, though, was the soda counter. Kids would come here after school and on weekends, sit on the bar stools, and order up treats. Malts, milkshakes, ice cream, floats - all served with a smile by the "soda jerks". One of them was a hard working and friendly teenager named Patricia Martin who would so impress the boss that he married her! She is my grandmother.

My grandfather spent long hours in the store to secure a good life for his family. My grandparents raised 3 sons and a daughter in their unassuming little house. Just as they were preparing to retire, I came along and they raised me too. The greatest parents, grandparents, mentors anyone could ever hope to have. My heroes. Then, now, and forever.

Clark's Pharmacy closed in 1973, but lives on in so many memories. To this day people I've never even met come up to me. "Are you Artie Clark's grandson?" "Yes, ma'am I am." "Oh my dear, I fell in love at your grandfather's soda counter. That is where I had my first date, my first kiss. And, well, I guess you know the rest". Or "my daughter woke up with a terrible deathly cough one night. Must have been past midnight. In a terrible panic, I called your granddad. Artie met me down at the store and knew just what we needed. Some special elixir nobody else had. Worked like a charm. He just put it on my tab and sent me on my way. I'm forever grateful". My heart just swells with pride when I hear these stories from complete strangers nearly forty years after the store closed for good. I just smile and say "that what kind of man he was!"

In loving memory of Arthur Jacob Clark Sr. (1912-2003). I miss you Grandpa.
