There aren't many better ways to spend an afternoon than watching the sunset in Paris Disneyland.

Phantom Manor

Stretching Room

Phantom Manor's stretching room has a similar yet different tone to its script, as reflected by the title of this photo. This is not because something is lost in translation, but is because the attraction's story is quite different.

The narration was originally in English by Vincent Price but was apparently changed around the time the park opened to the general public. I was fortunate enough to have a blog reader send me a recording of Vincent Price's original English narration, and it's quite eloquent. It focuses on lost beauty and youth for reasons unique to Phantom Manor's (and Frontierland's) storyline.

In my years of visiting Walt Disney World, I have never been able to capture this scene

(with the ceiling illuminated) in the Haunted Mansion Stretching Room. It's no easier to capture in Paris, but I was able to capture this on my first try. Beginner's luck, I suppose?

We just wrapped up the final installment of our Disneyland Paris Trip Report. Total, it has 621 photos in it, so check it out if you're interested in seeing more of Disneyland Paris, or hearing my thoughts on the parks.

...at Disneyland Paris. Thanks for looking and have a great day!

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland Paris is located on an island in the center of the Rivers of the Far West in Frontierland. A ride along the river on the Molly Brown offers a 360 degree view as riders experience what is IMO the very best version of Big Thunder ever built.

Five Nights of Phantom: Night 4

Unlike the Haunted Mansion in WDW, Phantom Manor actually loads you through the front door. The queue, however, still winds around the side through a nice garden before leaving you on the porch in front of the entrance. There IS a direct path to the front door, but one that always remains gated off, reminding guests that they are not necessarily welcome inside the manor. This, of course, just builds more curiosity.

Phantom Manor was our favorite attraction in Disneyland Paris, with Frontierland being our favorite land. The Thunder Mesa storyline is superb.

If you're interested in seeing more of Phantom Manor, I've written a Phantom Manor "Ride-Through" blog post with a brief synopsis of the attraction and 76 photos.

Five Nights of Phantom: Night 5

From the aforementioned front path to Phantom Manor. It twists and turns a bit for an excellent buildup.

Happy Halloween, everybody.

Phantom Manor, or Ravenswood Manor as it used to be called, was the home of Henry Ravenswood and his family. Henry struck it rich on Big Thunder Mountain and built his elegant home overlooking the mine that made him rich and Thunder Mesa, the town that sprung up around it.

Everything was great for the Ravenswood family until his daughter, Melanie, fell in love with a local minor and got engaged. This enraged Henry who felt his daughter was too good for any lowly minor and vowed to stop the wedding.

A big earthquake struck Thunder Mesa and killed Henry and his wife. Melanie continued with her plans to get married; however, before the wedding her fiance died under mysterious circumstances. Some locals believed it was the ghost (or Phantom) of Henry Ravenswood who had returned from the grave to prevent his daughter's marriage. Melanie was so consumed with grief that she spent the rest of her life wandering around her father's Manor in her wedding dress... and continued to do so after her death.

After these tragic events occurred the Manor fell into disrepair due to neglect. Most locals would not go near the house believing it to be haunted by both the ghost bride and the Phantom that killed her fiance.

Night 1

Five Nights of Phantom: each night this week I'm posting a new Phantom Manor photo. Each one will be a slightly different take on the exterior, counting down to Halloween. Should be spooky and fun.

When it comes to Halloween, Phantom Manor has 2 things going for it: the dilapidated exterior provokes an air of unease unlike its Haunted Mansion cousins, and there's no "Nightmare before Christmas" decorations ruining the mood. When it comes to Halloween proper, Phantom Manor rules Halloween. This crisp, windy evening, with not a soul around me, certainly felt uneasy in a way I've never felt around the Haunted Mansion.

One of my favorite attractions in Disneyland Paris was Phantom Manor and it's so photogenic as well.

As you get ready to board your doom buggy in the Phantom Manor you still this haunting stair case. Please the doom buggy outline in the bottom center of the photo. This is a handheld shot with no IS snapped as we rushed to hop on the ride. Thanks for looking.

It isn't always easy to get 3 Disney park icons into one photo, especially with a perfect reflection of them all. I just happened to get lucky with clear skies and no wind on a perfect Paris evening.

Phantom Manor

Phantom Manor is a dark ride attraction in Frontierland at Disneyland Park in Disneyland Paris. Phantom Manor is the park's version of the Haunted Mansion attractions at Disneyland, Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland, although a lot of scenes from the Haunted Mansion have been reimagined to correspond with a darker theme. It opened with Euro Disneyland on April 12, 1992.

The attraction combines a walk-through portion with Omnimover vehicles and features special effects and Audio-Animatronics. This version of the ride has a distinct plot, compared to the largely ambiguous storylines of the other Haunted Mansion attractions in Disney parks. It is designed to be darker in tone than the other Haunted Mansion rides. The ride also features a unique orchestral soundtrack, differing from the American and Japanese versions.

Like the Haunted Mansions located in other Disney parks, only the introduction of the ride (the Octagonal Portrait Gallery) takes place in the visible Manor façade. The actual ride itself takes place in a large warehouse-style show building hidden behind the Manor.

Phantom Manor's Omnimover portion is similar to the Disneyland Haunted Mansion's system. The track layouts of both are almost identical, but not completely. The main difference is that Phantom Manor's track is slightly longer, primarily to accommodate the Phantom Canyon scenes that substitute for the graveyard scenes in the other rides. Many scenes from the classic Haunted Mansions are replicated, but altered to incorporate the new Western theme and plot, such as the Octagonal Portrait Gallery, the Portrait Corridor, the Endless Hallway, the Conservatory, the Corridor of Doors, Madame Leota’s Seance Room, the Ballroom, and even the busts singing Grim Grinning Ghosts.

After entering the Phantom Manor in a dusty foyer you will be guided into an octagonal room with four portraits of a young Melanie, with each of her four suitors. Suddenly the room appears to stretch upwards and the paintings grow taller. The Phantom comments "It appears everyone is doomed at Phantom Manor. Even you." He goes on to add that the chamber has no windows and no doors, offering the guests a "chilling challenge": to find a way out.

It's October and that means the phantoms have come to take over the manor at Disneyland Paris.
