What?! Nope, definitely not!
Hmm... fine, I guess I'll take it then!
I wrote about Flynn's health issues last year but basically he only has 1 kidney & the fine filtration system of that kidney is now "leaky", resulting in lots of protein being lost in his urine, which is bad for the kidney & overall health. Flynn tried the only medicine made for dogs - Fortekor - but it didn't appear to help (or not much) & he was very lethargic/depressed while on it. On NYE, we took him off Fortekor. Flynn's behaviour bounced back but on Wed this week, when we went to the vet, we were upset to learn his pee is now so high in protein, it maxed out the machine. Thankfully, despite the rapid rise in protein loss, Flynn still seems to feel mostly OK, his weight has actually gone up (rapid weight loss is a concern) & overall the vet's pleased with his condition but we do need to try & get the problem under control.
Leaky kidneys are more common in cats than dogs & there are more treatment options for them... & so erm... yeah, I signed a form & Flynnie's started this cat medicine, Semintra! Semintra is just a low dose formula of the human drug used for high BP - telmisartan. If Flynn takes it long-term, he may end up on the human tablets instead!! Difficult - very occasionally, it can cause nasty side-effects (albeit reversible if caught quickly) but on the other hand, many specialists now think telmisartan may actually be the best medication to manage Flynn's condition. Vet & I agree, at this point, potential benefits outweigh risks. Flynn's only been taking it a couple of days, he's a bit sleepy after - which isn't unexpected - so we're taking things steady & letting him do as much or little as he wants. He's still enjoying snacks, playtime & short walks, so that's good. Back to the vets in 2 weeks for lab work... Fingers crossed!
