Not all arthropods that are picked up on tick drags are ticks. Recognizing how ticks move can help distinguish them from other arthropods.
Cutworms are night-crawling #pests that chew through #plant stems at ground level; they are particularly fond of young transplants of broccoli, cauliflower, and their relatives. Foil cutworms by forming 2- to 3-inch-diameter #collars out of large index cards. Slip a collar over each transplant and push the collar an inch or so into the #soil.

The Toadflax Brocade Moth (Calophasia lunula) is native to Europe but was intentionally introduced to North America in the 1960s in attempt to control yellow toadflax (Linaria vulgaris) and dalmatian toadflax (Linaria genistifolia ssp. dalmatica) in places where these exotic plants are considered noxious weeds.
I saw this caterpillar on a wooden post and watched for over an hour as it built a cocoon by chewing up pieces of wood and placing the chewed wood around itself until it was completely enclosed.

Because of the oils on their fur, rodents leave sebum trails or grease marks along surfaces where they travel frequently. This image shows that rodents are entering and exiting the building through this opening. If you look closely, you can also see that the top of the wires have been chewed by the rodents. Japanese beetles are destructive pests as adults that feed on plants, as well as larvae (grubs) that destroy the roots of lawns and other plants. Imported from Japan, this pest is widespread and can damage a number of landscape plants and agricultural crops.

Taken for the Active Assignment Weekly! group. This week's assignment: Go Green
Although I am a chemist I still think that no chemical pest control can induce as much fear and loathing to an aphid like the view here. These nice little lady bugs are probably the most efficient hunter killers when it comes to keeping our leafs clean. And still they look so sweet and innocent...
What it took: Found this girl here (are all ladybugs ladys?) sitting on a leaf in our garden. Apparently all prey was already removed so it kept quite still and let me take about 30 shots (some with flash despite sunlight but in the end unnecessary) in different settings. After that it took a dump which was the friendly sign for me to get lost and stop flashing her directly into the eyes. I think it would have been better to close the aperture even more here to get a larger focus area, but this was the best shot to convey the threat these bugs pose on aphids.
For insiders: I am curious how many people will find this photo on Flickr by searching for "black dots" and the Canon EOS 5D Mark II...

After feeding on blood, bed bugs retreat to their hideaway. They will defecate (poop) processed blood, leaving black stains near their resting place. When searching for bed bugs on a bed or head board, look for black fecal stains. For more information: www.nysipm.cornell.edu/whats_bugging_you/bed_bugs/default...
