The Four Poster System is an application device for treating deer for tick infestations. The setup includes rollers with a mild pesticide solution and a bucket of corn, which deer love. The deer put their heads through the rollers to get a treat and ticks are eliminated from their hide. This system is being used on Fire Island National Seashore in New York.

Every year in my neighborhood the city releases a few gazillion ladybugs into the tulip trees to deal with the aphid problem. The aphids eat the tulip leaves, and they excrete this sticky sap stuff that gets on everything. So, they release ladybugs, and the ladybugs eat the aphids. This is the larval stage of the Harlequin Ladybug. It's pretty cool looking. Some might say creepy.

Pest strips slowly release pesticides into an area and are designed to work as a fumigant. According to the label, these items are to be used in storage areas that are not inhabited for more than 4 hours a day, or living spaces that are vacated for at least 4 months after installation. Thus, use in this setting (a bar to reduce fruit fly populations) is a Federal violation. Remember to read the label on all pesticide products!

This is the seven-spotted Lady Beetle (Coccinella septempunctata), introduced from Europe, is an effective predator of aphids. A single larva can consume 800 to 1,000 aphids and an adult will eat from 3,000 to 4,000 aphids during its lifetime. This is a large lady beetle and is 7-8 millimeters.

The blood for feeding to tsetse flies is checked for bacterial contamination by inoculation on sheep-blood agar plates and incubated for 48 hours. Blood with less than 10 colonies is acceptable for feeding. (Entomology Unit, Seibersdorf, Austria, 2 June 2006)

The larvae of antlions live in loose sandy soil where they create a pit by flicking soil particles out until a cone is formed. The larva sits at the very bottom of the pit, lying in wait for an arthropod to tumble down into its jaws. The adults have elongated bodies and wings. Antlions are related to lacewings.

Black-legged ticks that can transmit Lyme Disease, Anaplasmosis and Babesiosis are encountered in areas that maintain moisture, such as tall grass and wooded areas. By staying on trails and avoiding tick habitat you can avoid a tick encounter. For more information on ticks: www.nysipm.cornell.edu/whats_bugging_you/ticks/default.asp

The tradition of hanging dead moles on a fence use to be more common in the UK. It was the way the mole catcher showed the farmer how many he had caught and was paid correctly.

Termite alates or swarmers emerge in the spring, usually after a warm, rainy day. Unlike worker and soldier termites that are cream colored, alates are black and have wings. However, wings may drop off and can be found in a pile on the floor. For more information on termites: www.nysipm.cornell.edu/whats_bugging_you/termites/default...

Tsetse fly females produce one fully formed larva each 10 days. The white larva starts to pupate within a few minutes and soon changes colour through brown to almost black. (Entomology Unit, Seibersdorf, Austria, 2 June 2006)

The Green Bee Eater, often referred to as Little Green Bee Eater (Merops orientalis) was sitting on a twig checking its perimeter for bees and other flying insects that can be hunted. Once it locates its quarry, it rushes to the spot with a classical flight supported by its sleek wings and fan-like tail to capture its prey.

If the insect is too tiny, it would swallow whole, but it would generally hit the insect against the perch, as shown by the swaying head after it lands, to ensure that the insect is dead before swallowing the protein-rich meal.

The good thing about these birds are that they pick up a particular perch and return to the same spot for eating. They are very active during late mornings and early evenings, while the nesting birds with chicks to feed would not mind having a few mid-day meals as well.

Please watch the video in HD mode and enjoy the sounds of the birds in the vicinity.

Online Etymology Dictionary

humane

c.1450, variant of human, used interchangeably with it until early 18c., when it began to be a distinct word with sense of "having qualities befitting human beings." But inhuman still can be the opposite of humane. The Royal Humane Society (founded 1774) was originally to rescue drowning persons.

Old pipes with residue from sinks or septic lines can provide harborage for cockroaches if they remain damp. Pipes that are no longer in use should be removed from inside buildings and discarded. For more information on cockroaches: www.nysipm.cornell.edu/whats_bugging_you/cockroaches/defa...

While conducting an inspection to identify the source of a cockroach infestation, several areas conducive to cockroaches were identified. While this site provides some harborage for cockroaches, it is suspected that the insects were actually living ABOVE this area where droppings were found. When conducting an inspection, always remember to look up, down and all around. For more information on cockroaches: www.nysipm.cornell.edu/whats_bugging_you/cockroaches/defa...

(Harmonia axyridis) Asian Lady Beetles were introduced to the United States as biological control agents. They are voracious in their appetite for agricultural pests (aphids, scales), and can be differentiated from other lady beetles by the white markings on the side of their pronotum bordering a dark M-shape from above (W-shape here). The number of spots and color (mustard-yellow to reddish-orange) is variable for this species. For more information: www.nysipm.cornell.edu/whats_bugging_you/occ_invaders/def...

Paper nesting wasps, including yellowjackets, paper wasps and hornets, collect paper fibers from dead wood to make their nest cartons. This cedar wood structure is the perfect substrate for this yellowjacket to use! Resulting damage is aesthetic, but some people might object to this. Finishing wood structures is highly recommended to prevent this type of damage.
