In Peru, on the Pacific side of the Andes, lush river valleys cut through seemingly endless mountainous desert.
Every valley was occupied at one time or another by pre-Columbian cultures.
Roads, simple footpaths or royal Inka highways, connected valley centers to each other and to the coast and highlands.
Today the valleys are still intensively farmed, with expanding agriculture sometimes threatening archaeological sites.

The Belmond Andean Explorer pauses under dramatic Andean skies, its iconic blue carriages standing out against the arid high-altitude landscape. A crew member leans from the window while a passenger steps down onto the desert ground, capturing a rare still moment during one of the world’s highest and most scenic train journeys between Cusco, Puno and Arequipa.
