In Aguas Calientes the hillsides are steep and the railway line runs along the bottom of the valley, which also happens to be a commercial district. I was surprised (although I don't know why) to see a mixed train standing in the street while men swarmed around unloading the freight cars. Prepare to see the unexpected in colourful Peru, you'll not be disappointed.

Peru Highway 1, most widely known as Carretera Panamericana, is the most important highway in Peru.
This road is the Peruvian portion of the Pan-American Highway. It runs north–south through the whole length of the country and connects all major cities in the country's coastal area.
The northern terminus of the highway is located in the Macará International Bridge (Piura Region) at the border with Ecuador. Starting in this point, the highway is known as Carretera Panamericana Norte ("North Pan-American Highway") until it reaches a point located in central Lima, the country's capital.
Going south from this point, the highway is called Carretera Panamericana Sur ("South Pan-American Highway"), until it reaches the southern terminus, located in the Santa Rosa Border Post, in the Tacna Region at the border with Chile.

The San Pedro Market in Cusco is situated about an eight minute walk south from Plaza de Armas, but it's a world away in its difference. The market is filled with life, colour, noise and smells. Everything from raw meats and spices to frying chicken and lomo saltado (stir fried beef) will greet you. All kinds of fresh fruits, and fruit juices are on sale. No matter what you want, you'll find it in the San Pedro Market in Cusco.
Peruvian Pelican - Pelecanus thagus - Though closely related, the Peruvian Pelican is almost twice as large as its northern congener, the Brown Pelican. The species breeds along the Pacific Coast of South America in Peru and Chile. Though still common, with about half a million breeding adults, the population has been negatively affected by strong El Niño fluctuations and changes in food fish populations, particularly anchoveta. Peruvian Pelicans are easily observed from shore as they fly back and forth in nearshore waters by means of soaring interrupted by deep, methodical wingbeats. Near threatened. doi.org/10.2173/bow.perpel1.01

The Koepcke's Hermit was our target bird for this day.
Large, orangish hermit from the Andean foothills. Light orange with a grayish-green back and a black mask typical of hermits. Warmer orange than similar hermits like Great-billed and White-bearded; larger and more slender-bodied than White-browed and Reddish Hermits; bolder facial pattern and slightly more curved bill than the similar Needle-billed Hermit, which replaces this species in the lowlands and does not often overlap in range.
This image was photographed in Northern Peru led by Neotropic Photo Tours and our Peruvian guide Steve Sánchez Wildlife Photography.
It looks lovely but it is very invasive. It is all over the front garden and even in the shade house. I dig it up where I can. Definitely only for a plant pot.

Amazing how the Inca's built this city and even more amazing the Spanish didn't find it. Wonderful to be there...

Small, plump bird with stout bill. Male mostly lime green with contrasting yellow belly and thin blue collar on nape and blue rump; some populations entirely blue above. Female similar but duller, with greener belly. Usually seen in pairs or small flocks, often in association with a fruiting tree. Forages at all levels, most frequently in the canopy.
This one was photographed in Northern Peru led by Neotropic Photo Tours and our Peruvian local guide for this portion of the trip; Fisher Chávez of Perú Nature Photography.

Ten days ago I received a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers from my hubby. The flowers lasted a long time but today I need to separate the best of the bunch and discard the blooms that are spent. The Peruvian Lilies have stayed the freshest and I will arrange them in a new vase with some foliage. They really do brighten up my day.
