The domestic yak (Bos grunniens), a descendant of the wild yak (Bos mutus), is a long-haired cattle found throughout the Himalayan region of the Indian subcontinent, western and northern China. It is related to the cattle (Bos primigenius).
The yak has a bulky frame and dense, long fur that hangs down lower than the belly. The bull can weight up to 255 kg, and has large, curved horns up to 100 cm in length. The cow is smaller and has smaller, upright horns.
The yak is well adapted to high altitudes, with thick layer of subcutaneous fat, large lungs and heart and the persistence of foetal haemoglobin throughout life.
Yak and their manure have little to no detectable odour and its wool is naturally odour resistant.

Paraluna combines kinetic sculpture, LEDs and music. Its main component is a disc 10m in diameter with 17,280 LEDs. A computer controls the LEDs while rotating, raising, lowering, and tilting the disc.
Some of the LED patterns work with the rotation of the disk, creating spirals. Others use persistence-of-vision, making an image hover in space above the spinning LEDs. Spokes demonstrates both of these styles: photos.app.goo.gl/DcP9IauNTjRHENUh2
Surrounding the disc are several high-quality speakers that play classical music at comfortable, yet immersive volume, creating a comfortable, peaceful place to be. Patterns are chosen to complement each musical piece, as with Firmament:
At this time of year the sun sets towards the end of the pier in Southport. I had tried a few nights earlier but was thwarted by a low cloud bank about 20 minutes before sunset ... so headed out tonight and had a little more success, although the sun was setting a little more northerly than I'd hoped.
Never mind, maybe I'll try again in about 3 months.

Native, warm-season, perennial, erect, hairless grass to 1 m tall and with well developed stolons. Stems are branched and flattened near their base. Flowerheads are digitate, with 3-5 straight to limp branches arranged in one plane. Spikelets are 2-flowered (sometimes 3), pale green to purplish-black and blunt at their apex. Upper awn is shorter than the spikelet. Flowers from late spring to autumn. Found in woodlands, native pastures and roadsides; usually on better (often heavier) soils. Native biodiversity. Excellent drought tolerance, but low to moderate frost tolerance. Has moderate forage value and is readily grazed by cattle during summer. Acts as a useful soil stabiliser due to its stoloniferous habit. Can withstand regular defoliation, but rotational grazing aids persistence and spread.
I'm making a "Persistence of Vision" toy, which will show a programmed message in eight red light- emitting diodes.
In the Fab Lab we have a roll of copper foil backed with a conductive adhesive. I used a knife to cut out a hand shape. (In this case, I found it faster to work this way than to use the vinyl cutter.) I covered a small metal container with a vinyl sticker to insulate the foil board from the conductive tin. I soldered some surface mount LEDs and resistors onto the copper. I still have more to do!
If my photography had to be confined to a single subject, then that would be buildings that are falling apart. There are two levels on which I see these images as I seek to render them onto a piece of paper.
The first level is obvious, which is the lines. Whereas a new building will normally keep a boring symmetry, the alteration of lines makes for an interesting image. Sometimes the lines lead somewhere, but more often than not they remain hopelessly parallel, as if to point us in a direction of their eventual demise.
The other level is more emotional. These buildings have long ago given up the task of ensuring that everything remain at 90 degree angles, and allowed the effects of gravity to begin changing the course of things. Eventually, the vertical will become horizontal, but until that time comes there is a task at hand to remain as originally intended.
This image works on both levels. The window shows nothing on the inside, and once horizontal lines now point to the direction the building will eventually be. I think about how once people lived here and how it probably held an individual or a family, with hopes and dreams. The inhabitants have moved on in one way or another, and without them, the building is also in the process of moving on.
And after cutting some holes in the box for the buttons and applying a
great deal of tape to hold the components down inside, the persistence
of vision device was successfully modded into a golf ball case. Now
what? Well, I have plans for attaching it to the seat of a bicycle and
scrolling messages while I ride.
The flowering trees and shrubs are being persistent against the snow and cold. It's yet to be seen how much damage has been done by the frost and snow.
