Not quite back on Flickr - my proper computer has died on me for the moment (hopefully just for the moment), and my laptop really isn't ideal for Flickr. But I thought I could at least pop in and say hi!

This is a photo from Villa Borghese, Rome and the Temple of Asclepius built at the little lake there in the park. The temple building itself is late 18th century (built 1785-1792), but it was built as a home for some ancient sculptures. The statue of Asclepius himself is thought to have come from the Mausoleum of Augustus, and the other, smaller pieces are of Hellenistic date and style.

But there are a couple of things you can't see in this shot: 1) it was incredible hot, and even the evenings weren't all that nice. But they looked quite pretty. And 2) there was a big sign of the gate entering this area that said it was to close at 21, and I went in at a quarter past, hoping very much they wouldn't lock me in. Thankfully they didn't.

In the new church of Vallsjö - inaugurated in 1895, and built in Neo-Gothic style (really unusual in this part of the country). This church was built to replace the medieval church of Vallsjö, which was much smaller. Today the choice of place can look a bit weird, since the church is sitting at the outskirts of Sävsjö, a much larger place than Vallsjö. But when the church was built, things were different and Sävsjö just starting to grow after the railway had reached the place. So the place was chosen as a compromise between those who wanted to have it in Sävsjö, and those who wanted it next to the old church (the place now is 4 kilometres away, as the crow flies, from the old one - and a bit longer than that if you want to actually stick to a road).

Travelled 130 miles, One and half hours of tracking in mountain streams, standing still in the pouring rain for over 2 hours!

All the struggles became justified seeing this RUBY OF THE EMERALD FOREST, an extremely rare kingfisher in my country ( the Oriental dwarf kingfisher).

Such a colorful bird this is!

----- ----- -----

The oriental dwarf kingfisher (Ceyx erithaca), also known as the black-backed kingfisher or three-toed kingfisher, is a pocket-sized bird in the family Alcedinidae. This tropical kingfisher is endemic across much of the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It resides in lowland forests, typically near streams or ponds, where it feeds upon insects, spiders, worms, crabs, fish, frogs, and lizards.

This small bird is easily distinguishable from other birds in its range due to its red bill, yellow-orange underparts, lilac-rufous upperparts, and blue-black back.

The oriental dwarf kingfisher is one of the smallest known kingfisher species. It is only slightly larger than a medium-sized hummingbird and measures 12.5–14 cm in length (including bill and tail). Females typically weigh 14-16g and males 14-21.5g, making the males slightly larger. The two sexes are otherwise alike and sexual dimorphism is not present. Both males and females have a black spot on the forehead; blue and white patches on the side of the neck; a lilac-rufous crown, rump, and tail; a dark blue back and wings; a white chin and throat; pale yellow-orange underparts; a dark brown iris; and red legs, feet, and bill. Juveniles are duller and have less lilac colouring; a white chin, throat and belly; yellow-orange bill with pale tip; and blue scapulars and wing-coverts. This species of kingfisher has three toes, explaining why it is sometimes called the three-toed kingfisher, however, there are other kingfishers which also have three toes. The toe-count in these kingfisher species does not appear to be adaptive.

Male White-winged Crossbill (Loxia leucoptera) feeding on spruce cones in the suburbs of southwest Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The spruce trees were stressed due to dry conditions this past summer and produced a large cone crop this year. This resulted in a large number of both species of Crossbills moving into Edmonton this winter to feed on the abundant food supply.

Display of the state bedroom from Ulvsunda castle, now at the Nordic museum (Nordiska museet), Stockholm. The interior shows how the room would have looked like in the late 17th century and is made with the original furnishing which was donated to the museum in the early 20th century.

Even in its own time the room would have been more of a show-piece than an actual, everyday bedroom.

The room was made to suit the taste of Christina Catharina Stenbock (Stenbock was a very important Swedish noble family at the time) when she had married the owner of Ulvsunda, Anders Torstenson (who among his titles could count count and governor-general of Estonia).

The Brain—is wider than the Sky—

For—put them side by side—

The one the other will contain

With ease—and You—beside—

The Brain is deeper than the sea—

For—hold them—Blue to Blue—

The one the other will absorb—

As Sponges—Buckets—do—

The Brain is just the weight of God—

For—Heft them—Pound for Pound—

And they will differ—if they do—

As Syllable from Sound—
