8/150 Margaret Whittemore, Emmanuel Church, Shawnee County, Twelve miles southeast of Topeka in Monmouth township is this old stone church built in 1871. Tipping at a precarious angle is the old wooden belfry, perched on a broken stone foundation at the gable of the roof. Emmanuel Church, as it was called, was a mission church. Dr. J. N. Lee, rector of Grace Church in Topeka, was largely instrumental in securing the building. 63.84

Jim McHenry, Library Foundation Director, brought guests by for a tour of the Topeka Room. Here, Jeanne Mithen, Special Collections Librarian, talks about all the treasures we house upstairs, including turn-of-the-century furniture and art, Kansas authors, area high school yearbooks and a square grand piano.

Bob sent these to the library as a gift. They are some of his early works in jewelry. The smaller ring is a gift from a Topekan who went to high school with Bob. I think they’re remarkably well done, and some really innovative designs that show the promise of his later success.
