On January 7, 2010, just days before class was to start, the Los Angeles Times published a fascinating article on contemporary women architects, highlighting a striking building by Jeannie Gang. Earlier this year, the brand new President of Scripps College chose the Genius of Women as her inaugural theme. What serendipity! This gave us the perfect inspiration

for our artist book: the genius of women architects. After extensive

research and class discussion, a mission statement for the book evolved: Architecture, like books, is a delicate balancing act between stability and motion, interior and exterior, aesthetic values and structural practicalities. Books, like buildings, are fundamentally inhabited spaces. They are

incomplete without human interaction.

Lock and Key

Topeka State Hospital was an involuntary treatment facility. A small number of the patients were there by choice, but the majority had been committed by a court of law. The institution sat on a large tract of land and consisted of numerous buildings housing many different wards. The wards were all locked, so there were dozens and dozens of locked doors. In the older section, the doors had old fashioned dead bolt locks with see-through keyholes that locked and unlocked from both sides. They operated with the turn of a large master key labeled 40-B.

A person entering the ward would unlock the door, enter and be deluged by greetings, questions, requests, complaints and other clamor. It was easy to become so distracted that one could fail to turn and relock the door. If the person pulled the door shut but failed to relock it, the news of an unlocked door would spread quickly among the patients.

Some patients deeply resented and rebelled against being there. They watched for any opportunity to slip out to apparent, often short-lived, freedom. Others resented being there but would not try to leave; they seemed indifferent to an unlocked door. Many of the patients, for whatever reason, would soon report that the door was not locked and sometimes even admonish the person who committed the security violation.

Soap Story, 1999

Fabric, silkscreen, lithograph, soap

Edition of 200; Bologna, Italy TSCPL Permanent Collection

This artist’s book tells the story of a young woman in Calabria, Italy during the 1950s, whose real life reads like a fairy tale, or soap opera, in six installments. In order to give lasting form to this oral history, the reader must release the text, silkscreened on linen pages, from six tiny bars of soap. After hanging to dry, ironing optional, the rags slot into six pages with oval die-cuts, through which the text remains visible. The pages are bound with a linen rag into a handmade, cloth-covered album. The book is housed in a matching cloth-covered box, lined with rags and sealed with a color-lithographed soap label.

The process confronting the reader reflects that which the protagonist must face, ultimately transforming her. You must merely transform the story, allowing the young woman to wash her hands of her sorrows.

The box is wrapped up in a reproduction of a page from a woman’s magazine, October 1956, titled “Mani di Fata” or “Hands of the Fairy.” This page, wrapping six pieces of soap, was an iron-on design for embroidery inserted as a gift in the same issue. The magazine itself was found on the floor of an abandoned villa in Calabria, not far from the town in the story. Wrapping up packets in recycled newspaper and twine is still the way fresh eggs or handmade soap travel from household to household. At the time of this story, the women used stones for washing the linen, silk and burlap they cultivated and wove for their own use.

Although this is a contemporary print, the streamlined view of the front of this ship, the symmetry of the image, and perspective which yields to the enormity and power of the vessel, it was selected to accompany the objects in this exhibit because it embodies Art Deco characteristics: understated and restrained elegance; sharply angular and geometric lines; futuristic concepts; suggestion of speed and movement.

Pegasus of New York, c. 1920s

woodcut

Gift of Ester L. Peers

Frank Peers was a Topeka printer who designed book plates, Christmas cards and various art prints.

In these prints it is easy to see the characteristic of the Art Deco style: sharply angular and geometric lines, often devoid of any decoration, suggestion of speed and movement, and an understated and restrained elegance.

Peers had stripped his female images down to simple lines and geometric shapes. There is a simple yet understated elegance to these forms.

In his cityscapes, Peers highlights a true Art Deco invention, the skyscraper. His angular lines and geometric forms combine to create a modern cityscape with a wonderful sense of movement.

"The Pop-Up Book of M.C. Escher"; M.C. Escher, Michael Sachs; Pomegranate Artbooks, Petaluma, CA, 1992. In the images in this book, M. C. Escher (Dutch, 1898-1972) shows us the limitless, the infinite, and the impossible -- continuous staircases that rise and yet end at their beginning points, two hands reaching out of a page to draw each other. The pop-up format adds even more intrigue, bringing the designs to life. Each pop-up is accompanied by a quotation from Escher's writings.

"Michael Hague’s World of Unicorns"; Michael Hague. Henry Holt and Co., New York, 1986. Popular children's book illustrator Michael Hague showcases the

unicorn in this beautiful, exquisite book with three-dimensional,

movable illustrations that rise up off the page and reveal a

magical world.

"Undersea Treasures"; National Geographic Society, Washington, 1995. Shipwrecks from ancient times to the present, spring to life from this imaginative and entertaining pop-up book. Illustrations will delight young readers as well as adults. This highly involved book has from five to seven pop-up spreads and, in most cases, one or two action devices on every page.

"ABC3D" by Marion Bataille

Roaring Books Press, New York, 2008; Prepare to be amazed. From the lenticular cover that changes with the angle of your hands all the way to the Z, ABC3D is as much a work of art as it is a pop-up book. Each of the 26 three-dimensional letters move and change before your eyes.
