Womi is a Fulani village along the Niger River. While walking through the village, a nice man offered to escort me and cleared the way for me to take several photos when the subjects disapproved. It turns out he wanted to take me to his home to photograph his mother, pictured above. She was not willing to make eye contact with me, but she did look regal in front of this beautiful turquoise wall, where she was seated on the floor. I have since made a print of this photo and mailed it by post to my guide, hoping he can hand deliver it to the family on a future visit.

Who are the Fulani?
The Fulani (French Peul) are one of the largest nomadic ethnic groups in the world. They are primarily West African, but can also be seen in Central and North Africa, making them one of the most widely dispersed and culturally diverse people in all of Africa. The Fulani are primarily herdsmen, raising cattle, sheep and goats, and many of their cultural taboos and traditions revolve around cattle.
The Fulani were the first in West Africa to embrace Islam, doing so in the 11th century. They conferred holy wars on other West African tribes during the 18th and 19th centuries in an attempt to convert others to Islam. The Fulani also had disputes with tribes that were agriculturally based as their livestock often decimated cultivated lands and crops.
The most characteristic feature of Fulani women is the use of perioral markings that blacken the lips and surrounding skin with either henna or, more typically, by tattoo. The women also decorate themselves with necklaces, earrings, nose rings and anklets.

Because the fangs of the spider are large and enter with considerable force, the bite is very painful and the pain will persist for hours to days. Perioral tingling usually occurs within 15 minutes followed by tongue spasms, lacrimation, salivation, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diaphoresis or severe dyspnea. Muscle fasciculations and spasms are also common. Cardiac arrythmias and cardiac arrest may occur. Severe pulmonary edema may occurs early and be fatal (Simon, 2004; Sutherland, 1972).
Treatment
The prehospital care is mainly supportive treatments
with ACLS protocols. Most bites do not result in envenomation and pain is the most common complaint. When envenomation occurs, standard life support measures and antivenin therapy are necessary. However, there is no antivenum available in Taiwan and supportive treatment is the main way. Tetanus immunization must be prescribed. Victims may be discharged safely in one day or so if they response well to antivenin. If antivenum is unavailable, the patient may need to stay more days in intensive care unit. Hypertension may be treated with alpha-blocker. Ventilator is indicated if respiratory failure is noted (Simon, 2004; Sutherland, 1972; White, Cardoso, & Fan, 1995).

Either you can give a trans axillary cut, in which the incision hides in the armpit, you can give a perioral incision, in which the incision is at the border of an areola, or an inframammary incident in which the incision is beneath the breast.

Years ago, stress gave me staph. The next time around, Hollywood stress gave me shingles. This time I've got the uber-sexy-sounding "perioral dermatitis." That's a rash around my eyes, nose, mouth, chest and back. HOTT. But it's way less worse than the surgery-requiring staph or the intense pain of shingles. So. I have to take antibiotics and smear cream all over me twice a day for six weeks. The antibiotics make me sick and the cream dries out my face until it peels.

You can't tell from this photo but my chin/mouth/under my nose is a nice red rash. My seborrheic dermatitis was actually perioral acne. The steroid cream I was on for a month actually made it worse. Then the antibiotic cream I tried last week made my skin break out in a rash. So now we're on oral antibiotics and leaving it alone. I've got my fingers crossed.
So I finally went to the doctor to see about this rash on my chin. Turns out I have lperioral dermatitis and will have to be on antibiotics for about 6 months. Yeah!
We also paid the deposit on our reception hall today. So, we have alcohol and a hall. Now all we need is food!
