Coyote Willow Performing at Pine Fest Music Festival in Halfway Oregon
A spectacular Saturday on the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway for day Pine Fest - Halfway, Oregon with the award Coyote Willow.
Billed as the tiniest music festival in the tiniest town, Pine fest is one of our favorite fall events along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. We had a great day hanging out with locals and visitors from Oregon Idaho and Washington listening to a great line up of bands and musicians from throughout the Northwest at the Baker County Fairgrounds in Halfway.
Pine Fest is the largest musical festival in Halfway but the community also hosts a number of other musical events including the summer concert series on the Main Street Stage. For more information about Pine Fest including next year’s dates and performers visit www.pinefest.org
The town of Halfway is just one of numerous small towns along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, a loop that encircles the Wallowa Mountains, intersecting with Interstate 84 at Baker City and La Grande, and communities all along the byway host a variety of festivals and community events throughout the year providing visitors a chance to celebrate local culture and visit with locals while exploring this incredibly scenic region of North East Oregon.
The byway is a popular destination for group tours and offers visitors a chance to experience small town Americana in small towns like Halfway, as they explore the rugged and spectacular Northeast Oregon landscape along the way.
The entire route is on a paved highway. Plan ahead - you'll find stretches of more than eighty miles without gas and with few services. A segment of the Byway between Joseph and Halfway closes with snow in winter, but allows access to winter recreation areas, offering a whole other kind of Northeast Oregon Adventure.
For more information about the Hells Canyon Scenic byways or other Baker County, scenic drives, events and attractions, visit the Baker County tourism website at www.travelbakercounty.com
Landing at RAF Lakenheath as ‘Tabor 12’
"aircraft and personnel assigned to both the 134th Fighter Squadron and 158th Maintenance Group, Vermont Air National Guard travelled to the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath, England to perform tests alongside their Airmen, personnel from the F-35 Joint Program Office, and members of the Air Force Research Laboratory.
Tests and evaluations were conducted to collect acoustic and bioenvironmental data in protective aircraft shelters specific to the F-35A Lightning II. Aircraft were run for two days in different shelters, while the rest of the two-week visit involved equipment set-up and test calibration.
“Given the fact that the engines, sound, and thrust profile are very different between airframes, this test was necessary to determine the parameters of safe shelter operation,” said Tech. Sgt. Galen Topper, an F-35 maintainer assigned to the 158th MXG. “We set out to find out at which location in the shelter the aircraft could run without exceeding the safe limits for noise, dangerous gas, and engine exhaust.”
“The shelters we tested have been in place at Lakenheath since late in the Cold War and have sheltered many aircraft, the most recent of which being the F-15,” continued Topper regarding the 48th FW’s facilities.
Also known as the “Statue of Liberty Wing”, the 48th FW is home to the U.S. Air Force’s first F-35A unit to be activated in Europe: the “Valkyries” of the 495th Fighter Squadron.
Tests were completed using sensitive microphones and sensors on and around the F-35As to obtain accurate noise-level measurements. Air-quality sampling equipment was also positioned around the concrete shelter and in the cockpit.
According to Topper, all test data was safely collected with no incidents.
In total, seven “Green Mountain Boys” maintainers flew to England for this test: two from low-observable, two crew chiefs, and two avionics specialists, along with one trip lead from the tactical aircraft maintenance squadron. Additionally, two F-35A pilots assigned to the 134th FS, Capt. Zachary “Kit3” Smith and Capt. Brendan “Beastie” Boyd, also participated in this evaluation.
“Each jet should have one of these hardened shelters on base. The tests were to make sure that everything was safe for the jet and us – the pilots and maintainers – and to certify those shelters before [the 48th Fighter Wing’s] jets arrive by the end of this year,” said Smith.
This testing was conducted in preparation for the “Liberty Wing” to base two squadrons of approximately 24 F-35As each, with the first two jets scheduled to be delivered to the U.K. toward the end of 2021.
“This was a step that was necessary to get F-35s there, which is the partnership we have with the U.K.,” said Smith. “People were very thankful at Lakenheath that we did this. The F-35 JPO and AFRL said we were a big help. It was meaningful that we did something that was helpful to the F-35 enterprise.”
Reflecting on this opportunity, Topper said that the “Green Mountain Boys” were able to provide a large service to the 48th FW by completing this testing before their first aircraft arrival. "
I had a blast seeing a live jazz performance featuring Edy Brisseaux, presented as a part of the Haiti Cultural Exchange's "Mizik Ayiti!" First Thursdays--which occurs the first Thursday of each month.
The event usually takes place at the Five Myles Gallery location on St. John's Place, but this night the location was at the Crown Heights Cafe (which has been having several wonderful events so check them out!.)

They performed three forms of Santali dance - Baha, Sohorai and Dong.
SNTALS
The Santhal (also spelled as Santal) are one of the Tribal peoples who live mainly in the states of Jharkhand, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Assam. They are one of the largest tribal community and one of the most studied tribal religions in India. The insurrection of the Santhals was mainly against the British and their supporters. On 30 June 1855 the Santhal rebel leaders Sidhu Murmu and Kanu Murmu mobilized 30 thousand Santhals and declared a rebellion against the British Raj.
The Santhals are an agricultural tribe, from time immemorial they have cleared forests, toiled the land, and produced food for subsistence. Beside agriculture they also domesticate animals. Apart from these the Santhals also are well versed in the art of hunting, where their exceptional skills with bow and arrows is noticeable.
SANTALI CULTURE
The Santhali culture has attracted many scholars and anthropologists for decades. Unlike many other tribal groups of the Indian subcontinent, the Santhals have preserved their native language despite waves of migrations and invasions such as Aryan, Hun, Mughals, Europeans, and others.
Santhali culture is depicted in the paintings and artworks in the walls of their houses. The Santhals mainly prefer group performance than solo, which is an important feature of tribal art form in India. Group dancing and singing is the most important medium to express their joy and happiness. The Santhali dance and music is tuned with the nature of occasion whether it is social or ceremonial. The three most quintessential instruments in Santhali music are two kinds of drums one Tumdak and the other Tamak, and Tiriao or flute. The Tumdak is a double headed drum having the shape of a frustum, the drum skins at left and right are made of animal skins. The one at the left has bigger circumference than the right. The Tamak has a hemispherical shape, with a wider circumference and played by two drum sticks. Tiriao or basically a bansuri is a bamboo made musical instrument with five holes.
The most well known dance form of the Santhals is a group of women with interlocked hands forming a semicircle, encircling a relatively smaller group of male percussionists at the centre. The dance steps and movements are in accordance with the beats which is relatively simple. The dance forms, countenance, and beats differ from region to region. The Santhali Dance have a wide variety and types and is tuned with ceremony and social celebrations. The Dasai dance is performed only by males of the community on festive occasions. Langre, Guluri, and Humti is danced all round the year, whereas Baha and Sohorai are only for festive seasons. In social ceremonies like marriage Dong is danced. Along with these popular dances some other rare forms like Rinjha and Jhika also exist and performed only in few regions.
The Santhal songs also have a variety similar to their dance, the Santali word for song is "Sereng". Generally singing is accompanied with dancing but there are some songs which do not include dancing. There is also a kind of song sung during the sowing of paddy. The "Gam Sereng" is another type of song which is sung in hot summer evening. Courtesy : (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santhal_people)
Spring watch at Baroghutu
Spring all over the World is a season of colors, and celebration of lives. Holi, a festival of colours, is a festival of Spring celebrated by the Hindus allover India. On the eve of Holi, in the last week of February this year, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to join the celebration of lives at Baroghutu with all its elements including the tribal dance performed by the Santals.
Mukutmanipur's undulating forested landscape marked by the vibrant colors of Palash (Butea monosperma) is refreshing and invigorating for the body and mind. It is marked by the prominent hillock about 200 metres high, locally named "Baroghutu" (Baro- twelve, ghutu-/stones/hill). The tribal (mostly santals) hamlets of Baroghutu, Jambeda, Kumorbahal, Dhagora and Mukutmanipur encircle this hillock. With a landscape that seems naturally designed for adventure, Mukutmanipur offers opportunities in rock climbing, trekking and a variety of water sports.
The local tribal festivals, Tusu, Bhadu, Sahrai and Badna are symbolized by fascinating music and dance, and strengthen the Mukutmanipur experience, laden with the relaxed air of nature in the heartland. The Bankura district has a tribal population famous for its music, art and culture. Mukutmanipur is one such quaint village. The community will provide the tourist with a life that is stress free.
(Sting Performs) - Billy Joel / Sting / Tampa Stadium - Triple Play Of Firsts In One Night - IMRAN™
I’ve known Billy Joel songs since the late 1970s, when I was literally a little boy in Karachi, Pakistan. I’ve appreciated Sting’s talent, lyrics, and music since the start. In 1980 Police songs like Don’t Stand So Close To Me made me love the band and artist.
Over the years, Sting’s solo later year songs have become even more special to me. Desert Rose and The Book Of My Life are masterpieces I can’t get enough of for their resonance with my soul.
Yet, I had not been to any of their concerts in the half century I’ve gotten to love these performers’ songs and talent more and more. Meanwhile, I’ve called Tampa Bay home for a dozen years but had never made it to Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers play.
Finally, I had a hat-trick or triple-play of firsts. What fun to see both legends, Billy Joel and Sting, do a joint concert in Tampa, Florida Saturday night, 02/24/24, at the Bucs stadium.
I had made reservations on Ticketmaster months ago. It was quite cold tonight, putting me in a New York State Of Mind. On top of it being a clear night, it was all happening live under a full moon. Grateful and blessed at another wonderful experience in The Book Of My Life.
Have you seen them in concert? What are your favorite songs of these two legendary artists?
