Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry was elected into the Sheriff’s office in early 2014. He began with a concrete agenda for improving the daily function and public perception of law enforcement in Cullman County. During his 18 months as Sheriff, Gentry has tirelessly worked overtime with his command staff to evaluate, design and implement positive changes and strong upgrades inside the Office.
Beyond the practical inner workings of the office itself, one of Sheriff’s Gentry’s primary campaign goals was to have law enforcement in Cullman County become more logistically accessible, citizen transparent and community involved. His highly successful Sheriff’s Citizen Academy series is just one shining example of his philosophy. He often says,
“This is Office is not my office, it is not the deputies office … it is the Citizen’s Office.”
Last week, Gentry took his campaign promises and desire for wider community involvement to the next level. He conducted the first ever Sheriff’s Youth Leadership Academy. While complex and rigorous in practical terms, its core essence was simple: ‘Assist the young people of Cullman County to grow into leaders all citizens can count on to guide this community into the future.’
The Youth Leadership Academy ran for five days at various locations throughout the county. The attendees were comprised of thirteen students from area highs schools. Lieutenant Rex Sorrow led the daily training.

Young people from the START Programme at Lisburn YMCA had a day of media training and research workshops exploring the media, perceptions and portrayals of young people. The day was facilitated by Include Youth's communications officer Sharon Whittaker and QUB's Dr Faith Gordon, who is involved in an ESRC knowledge exchange project.

Harpoon fishery is the traditional selective way of catching swordfish in the Mediterranean Sea.
Today only 10 traditional boats (feluche) can still afford to operate in the Strait of Messina (Sicily, Italy).

Small-scale fishermen are the watchmen of the sea, the first to perceive any changes and the first to be affected by these changes. This is what the new Oceana video “Feluche: artisanal fishermen as watchmen for the Mediterranean swordfish” shows. In the video, the international marine conservation organization gathers witnesses from among traditional harpoon fishermen, to share their perception of the status of the Mediterranean swordfish.
