This was taken on a train ride from Mexico City to Veracruz in 1975. This was the view out the train window. This is a scan from the original negative from my 35mm film archives.

This is in the Uxmal area near Merida. It's on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. It is a scan from my original negative from 1975. This Mayan edifice is also known as the House of the Dwarf. We did not climb those steps! Thank you for viewing. It was taken either with a Pentax ES or Spotmatic

This is the way to climb up and down the Pyramid of the Magician. This is at the Mayan ruins site in Uxmal on the Yucatan Peninsula. It's a scan from my original negative which I processed myself. I'm going through my archives and scanning while spending this extra time at home. Thank you for looking with me.

I took this photo for a video on the most beautiful cameras ever made. Not only do I like the black Spotmatic SPII (the Pentax Spotmatic was my first proper film SLR camera), but I also like the square look of the lens/hood.

Sitting on a near contemporary black Spotmatic SPII camera.

The Ultra Achromatic is a very rare lens, dating to around 1968. The elements are made of a combination of fluorite and crystal ("quartz fluorite"), rather than glass. It has 5 elements in 5 separate groups, with no cemented elements, as the materials used to cement elements together would reduce the lens’s effectiveness.

The use of uncoated quartz fluorite elements was designed to improve the transmission of ultraviolet rays as well as visible rays; reduce colour dispersion and minimise chromatic aberrations...all characteristics that are important to scientists using ultraviolet and infrared photography.

Many thanks to Dr Jonathan Crowther, who owns this lens.

A Nikon F made in 1964, and a Pentax Spotmatic SPII, introduced in 1971.

The Nikon (including the lens) weighs in at 1006g. And it would be even heavier fitted with the Nikon T Photomic prism finder on top. The Pentax plus Takumar lens weighs 885g. Unlike the Nikon, the top prism finder doesn't detach.

Back in the day, I always enjoyed using this Spotmatic. A beautifully engineered and reasonably small SLR, with excellent lenses. Good reasons for the camera being the top selling SLR world-wide at the time, plus it was less expensive than the F. But I think I'd have enjoyed the Nikon just as much. It has such a solid workmanlike feel.
