The lyrics are from 'you got the love' by the source, I thought they went pretty well but you can be the judge. :)

Over 13 days, I worked on a drawing. I did this because I hadn't drawn much with my hands in a while--I missed that. At the end of each session I scanned the results and reflected on the process. This is the preview. I will be posting each image separately and my thoughts on it in the coming days.

The image that this project was based upon comes from the beautiful photography of Mashrik Faiyaz. Check out more of his work on Flickr at www.flickr.com/photos/mashrik

This is DAY 02:

BE A LISTENER

“Once you stop thinking, you’ve stopped drawing.”

It’s been close to a decade since I sat in his class, but this statement, along with many other gems from this professor, remain with me; in spite of my poor performance.

Don’t dismiss this as a rant against getting into the flow.

Here, thinking means that you are asking questions as you draw. You are actively seeking to discover your subject.

This doesn’t mean that drawing is neurotic. Drawing becomes neurotic and emotionally draining when you shift the focus off your subject onto you. When the drawing becomes about you, you miss what the subject is trying to show you about itself. Instead you focus on your biases, preconceived notions and what you are or aren’t capable of. This leaves little room for careful listening and patience to build the drawing.

The whole process threatens to become a fight; a fight that you think is the subject itself. But, actually, you are blindly fighting yourself.

Work with an empty mind. But if you can’t let go of your assumptions, observe quietly how your subject challenges those assumptions. And realize that the subject isn’t doing this to hurt you or tell you that you’re a bad artist. The subject simply exists. All the frustration and resistance is you! You are trying to impose yourself onto your subject, but you can’t see this (yet)!

Thinking is the search.

The search is the listening.

So, actually, once you’ve stopped listening,

You’ve stopped drawing.

When you take yourself out of the drawing process, you can better accept difficulty and apparent contradictions from your subject. Finally, you will begin connecting with your subject. You will disappear into the subject. In this mind-space you have a greater chance at tapping into flow. Even if you don’t feel the flow now, the journey to flow will become easier.

pass on stranger- you who seek the sun. These will disappoint. They are in the greenery. Such greenery. Henceforth all shall be greenery.
