c. 1970. pencildrawing. A portrait made from memory.
An old sketch that I made in 1970. In 2010 I gave it a final touch, some shadow etc.
Childhood/adulthood.
Blending.
The first year of medicine study is a try-out.
So this very young woman ..she wondered..
Can I memorise all those facts about the human body?
The names of medicines?
Master this science? So fascinating.
Can I take this step: do sections
on a dead human person
for research?
According to the studyprogram she had to do this.
During her first year. A test.
So young, nineteen years old...
Those bodies, they are prepared,
they look a bit like waxen forms or dolls,
not so human, she told me.
Her room...where she had read
her first childrenbooks, sweet stories,
was now changed, a studentplace.
But she still kept some of the pets
she nursed during childhood.

this took forever to finish - the headdress was just endless. but i like this image - and i like the drawing. although, i notice that her eyes do seem like they could be looking in different directions - they are doing that in the original photo as well. it just doesn't appear that way when you just look at it quickly. you have to look for a few seconds to really notice...
