The impressive ruins and castle at Methoni at the very tip of one of the capes of the Peloponnese Peninsula in Greece.

The original castle dates from the 12th century and was built by the Venetians and was extended and remodelled by the Turks from the 14th century.

Octagonal domed church with surrounding buildings on the south side. Built in the 12th century (1149-1150).

The sculptural decoration dating back to the 12th century and frescoes dating back to the late 12th - early 13th century. The written and oral tradition connects the church with the Emperor Andronicus II Palaeologus (1282-1328). The church, according to historical sources, was dedicated to the Virgin Hodegetria.

After the revolution of 1821 was dedicated to the Wisdom of God, because it was a replica of St. Sophia in Constantinople.

One of the highlights of my trip to Greece earlier in the year was the pair of Greek Phantoms going through Vouraikos Gorge in the lead up to the 2025 Iniochos exercise. This was the lead aircraft, going fast and low...

"To notice the beauty in things left behind, is to see the soul of the life it once lived." Heather Durren.

At the south of the remote Mani Peninsula, towards the southernmost part of the Peloponnese, lies the "ghost" village of Vathia. This Greek town was almost completely abandoned after World War II. Its characteristic tower-houses, built for defensive purposes during the 18th century to ward off invaders and rival clans, are a magnificent example of the traditional architecture of this part of Greece.

Since the 80s of the previous century, the Greek government began a recovery process in Vathia, and little by little some of its buildings have been converted into tourist accommodations. However, during our visit in March, we did not come across anyone. Although the restoration of some buildings was noticeable, others were still in a state of abandonment. However, Vathia's beauty has stood the test of time, and the soul of its past can still be admired in its remains.
