Leaving Nga Manu Nature Reserve, we returned to our Motel Unit at Peka Peka where I set about "editing" the photos I'd just taken with the 'help' of the screen on the back of the camera...(I strongly recommend that you never do this!).
Ultimately satisfied with my editing skills, we turned the TV on - only to find it had been 'fried' in a Power outage...!
By the time the Proprietor had replaced it with one from another Unit, the sun (and keep in mind that this was our last night at the motel) had started to sink into the Tasman Sea... ...!
The sunset on our first evening at Peka Peka had been spectacular, but this one was even better...! In fact, I've never seen such beautiful Reds and Oranges in a sunset...! I think God was exceptionally busy on this evening as he worked on this Canvas. In fact, I can imagine God thrusting his paintbrush furiously backwards and forwards across the heavens as he became more and more excited about the Masterpiece he was creating...!!!
The Sandcastle Motel, Peka Peka is a very comfortable little Motel nestled in the midst of a small community which in turn sits right beside a long stretch of beautiful, unspoiled coastline... If you're looking for an exciting nightlife, don't go there, but if you're looking for some quiet and relaxing "Time Out", well: look no further!

Peka Peka Wetlands, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand
For #13 in my series of places that are hard to reach at the moment due to the lockdown; Peka Peka Wetlands from September last year.
I have shot this location a lot, and it always amazes me how different the place looks depending on the weather and the time of year.

The Milky Way arches over Peka Peka Swamp, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand
This is a panorama made up from 8 photos, taken at the same time as I took this previous post www.flickr.com/photos/ajecaldwell/15190745459/
This image shows the 2 Magellanic Clouds to the left with Canopus below them, the Southern Cross at the lower left of the Milky Way arch, airglow on the horizon, light pollution from a nearby road in the centre of the frame and from Hastings on the right, and one of the best reflections I have ever seen at this location. Also for those that know their constellations Mars is visible in Scorpio.

As most of you know I am lucky enough to have a wife who shares my passion for photography, and consequently also shares many of my early morning excursions to shoot the sunrise.
Now normally when Liz and I are on location we try to stay as far away from each other as possible; to make sure that we are shooting something unique to us, and also to avoid getting in each others way.
But this morning was a bit different; the combination of the location and the direction of rising sun, meant that we wound up standing right next to each other on the boardwalk at Peka Peka Wetlands shooting the same sunrise at the exact same time ( 7:57am to be precise ). But we still managed to put our own spin on the same scene.

If you follow my wife on Flickr ( www.flickr.com/photos/132547510@N02/ ) you will know that this morning when we went to Peka Peka Wetlands she got in first and grabbed the central position on the boardwalk. But there is always more than 1 composition to be had....
Hawke's Bay is in the middle of a pretty severe drought at the moment, and this mornings visit to the wetlands was the first time that I had seen parts of it completely without water.

This photo has popped back to my notice, and I realised that I did not really like the original edit, so thought I would update it to my current tastes and reissue it.
This looks like a daylight shot, but was taken under the light of the full moon early in the morning in May 2013 (the same morning that this happened www.flickr.com/photos/ajecaldwell/10552770884/in/album-72... )
For anyone interested in the orientation of the view the bright star in the top right is Acamar.
Month of Mornings 14/30, Peka Peka Wetlands, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand
For my #monthofmornings location this morning I revisited a place and recreated a shot that has special meaning to me.
This location was the first place I found in Hawke's Bay, in 2012, where I could successfully take photos of the Milky Way.
So this morning I returned to Peka Peka Wetlands in the early hours to catch the Milky Way before it dipped below the horizon, before the sun rose behind me, and before the mist rolled in.
This image is a combination of 2 photos taken consecutively in the exact same spot:

Rooster, Peka Peka Wetlands, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand
On arrival at Peka Peka Wetlands a couple of weeks ago we were greeted ( in the predawn darkness ) with the familiar calls of roosters. After a bit of hunting around with a torch I found 4 roosters perched ( or roosting is perhaps more appropriate ) in a nearby tree.
After shooting the sunrise I returned to the car to find them scratching around under a bush and I managed to coax them out into the light to get some photos of their amazingly coloured plumage.

Even when the sunset is a non-event there is often a shot to be captured, especially when you are standing on the photogenic boardwalk in Peka Peka Wetlands and the clouds are moving overhead.
It is no surprise that I rate this in my top 5 locations in Hawke's Bay to photograph ( www.hawkesbaynz.com/see-and-do/great-outdoors/the-great-o... ).

If you follow my social media feeds it should come as no surprise that I like to take photos of the Peka Peka Wetlands just south of Hastings. So here is another shot taken in October last year, taken about 45 minutes after this shot www.flickr.com/photos/ajecaldwell/29924659452.
Again I broke out the Lee Big Stopper ND filter to allow a long exposure, in an effort to soften the clouds and the water, and also to try to pick up as many of the subtle colour tones as possible.

Year in Review #7: July
So this is the seventh image in my review of my 2018 photography, and as I explained in the previous posts I am posting images that have not been published before, but still represent some of my favourites for the year.
This sunrise must go down as one of the craziest that I have ever seen. As we were getting near time for sunrise a layer of mist rolled over us, and I thought that we weren't going to see any colour in the sky; but I was wrong. Next minute the entire sky turned red / pink and stayed like it for 10 minutes.

Peka Peka Beach, roughly 80 miles north of Wellington, starts at Paekakariki some 15 miles to the south, and continues north for I don't know how many miles!
Taken from just below our Sandcastle Motel, we're looking north in this scene - but also keeping a close eye on the surging surf (which swept up the beach seconds after the Shutter clicked!)...

This photo was taken not long after the "lightbulb" moment when I finally (after years of taking snapshots) got an understanding of how photos worked.
I had not shot in mist as thick as this before so there was still a lot of experimentation being done on that winters morning, but this is still a personal favourite shot in my collection.
BUT as is often the case the original photo that I released ( www.flickr.com/photos/ajecaldwell/14940914904/in/photolis... ) had some issues that always dampened my enthusiasm for it. So I took the opportunity to fix some of those imperfections and put it back out in the world in a new and improved form (well I think so anyway)
