This photo could symbolize many things. Suppression of little people; Dictatorship; Deep State; Big Brother; oppression against women. In fact, it represents the opposite. Jan Žižka led an army of peasants, little people against the powerful Roman Empire and they were victorious due his clever military tactics for many years (1419-1434) even after his death in 1424. Equipped with simple modified farming tools, his small army demonstrated the Power of People. The monumental bronze statue was sculpted by B. Kafka in 1931-1941 and is part of Vítkov National Monument. Žižka historical heroics are always on the mind of the Czech folk, when their freedoms are in jeopardy.

A young Pheasant taken on our garden wall last summer.

In their prime breeding season, the birds are quite active and end up chasing the other half. But since they are not sexually dimorphic, it is hard to know the male from the female unless they are next to each other. In this picture, I suppose this is the male since it was chasing another very similar looking bird which was a maybe 50m ahead of it. Both landed in a far off field.

I was hidden behind a bush when this beautiful pheasant appeared and walked calmly in front of me, too close to fit into the frame.
Although he heard me and probably saw me, he kept walking looking for food, I think he chose clover.

wrapping paper from The Museum of The Romanian Peasant (Muzeul Taranului Român) in Bucharest, where my parents-in-law had purchased some wonderful gifts for us a few years ago... This was their first visit back to their childhood home, from which they and their whole families had been deported to labour camps during the war.
The house relates to the middle 19th Century; its last owner was Kuryk Mykola Vasylovych. The house comprises of three parts – a house, a mudroom and a small house. Its external walls aren’t covered, only strips are painted around its windows and doors. Such strips are specific for houses from Vyzhytskyj and Putylivskyj districts of Chernivtsi Region. Art painting and strips are very distinct decorations for houses of lowland Bukovyna. The house’s joyful interior is created by grapes depicted on the stove, around windows and on pokut (the sacred place of a traditional home). The most widespread patterns in Korytne village are grapes, arrow-wood leaves, hops and crosses on bases.
The house is built of smereka and poplar wood, its area equals to 58.8 square meters.

Датується серединою ХІХ ст. Останній власник - Курик Микола Васильович. Складається із трьох частин - хати, сіней і хатчини. Зовні хата не мащена, тільки підведені смуги коло вікон та дверей. Така підводка характерна тільки для хат з Вижницького та Путильського районів Чернівецької області. Характерною декоративною оздобою для хат підгірської Буковини є розпис і підводка. Святковий інтер’єр у великій хаті створює розпис у виноград на печі, коло вікон на покуті. Найбільш поширений розпис у с.Коритному – «виноград», «калиновий лист», «хмелик» та «хрести на постаменті».
Хата з Буковини. Складена вона з кругляка смереки і тополі в прості замки з торцями. До верхів зрубу торці подовжуються і переходять ніби в кронштейни. Дах чотирисхилий, покритий соломою.
Площа споруди – 58,8 кв.м.

The kalij pheasant is closely related to the silver pheasant, and the two are known to hybridize. The placement of the taxa L. l. lineata and L. l. crawfurdi has been a matter of dispute, with some treating them as subspecies of the kalij pheasant and others as subspecies of the silver pheasant. They have greyish legs as in the kalij pheasant, but their plumage is closer to that of some subspecies of the silver pheasant. Additionally, as the silver pheasant, L. l. lineata and L. l. crawfurdi are found east of the Irrawaddy River, a major zoogeographic barrier, while all other subspecies of the kalij pheasant are found west of the river (L. l. oatesi, a subspecies of the kalij pheasant, has sometimes been reported as occurring east of that river, but this is incorrect). Based on mtDNA, it was recently confirmed that L. l. lineata and L. l. crawfurdi should be regarded as subspecies of the kalij pheasant.

What a joy to witness this behavior, what luck to be at the right place and the right time. this fight started in the ditch and worked it's way out by the road.

this cabin built in 1834 was owned by cattle dealer from Mszalnica, now to be seen at the Ethnographic Park in the city of Nowy Sącz.
I had wondered for some time why our melanistic male pheasant kept producing melanistic offspring even though this is due to a recessive gene. Today I found the answer - he has a dusky partner. In 3 years of following him I have never seen her and true to form she quickly flew off when she saw me.

This chap appeared at my feet while I was taking a shot of a stream. He proceeded to walk alongside me all the way across a field.... I'm not sure if he was keeping me company or escorting me off "the premises" :)
