A Grade-II listed landscape garden covering 30 acres of gorgeous Yorkshire countryside near Follifoot in Nidderdale. The scenic beauty of Plumpton Rocks has attracted many artists over the years, including JMW Turner, who painted it as his first commission in oils in about 1798.

Included in the gardens are striking natural rock formations formed of Millstone Grit, attractive woodland walks, and peaceful lakeside trails. Calling Plumpton Rocks a garden may give modern visitors the wrong idea; it is not what we today would call a garden, rather, it is a designed landscape, a picturesque, incredibly romantic idealised landscape laid out around a man-made lake and a series of fascinating rock formations with viewpoints across the water.

In January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night, a phenomenon occurring in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We set out early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. Our plan is to climb its spectacular fjells (mountains) and explore its pristine wilderness. Our adventure starts at the secluded hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien in Luosto. In Finland, traditional wooden houses are often referred to as "wooden cabins" or "wooden chalets." The Finnish word for a wooden house is puutalo. The snow here resembles an untouched white carpet, with trees draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step disrupts the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature here in Luosto appears to be in a deep winter slumber.

You can explore the shores of Kantalampi lake while hiking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing. At the heart of Ellin Saamenmaa lies an open fire pit, where you can bask in the cozy atmosphere. I can imagine lively tales of Finland shared around the campfire, accompanied by a warm drink. Campfire pits, or designated campfire areas, hold a special place in the Finnish outdoor experience. In Finland, the right to enjoy nature is cherished, known as jokamiehenoikeus , meaning everyone's right. This principle grants people the freedom to access and relish nature, including building campfires, under the condition of acting responsibly and preserving the environment. These pits not only serve a functional purpose but also foster social gatherings where individuals unwind, cook, and exchange stories. The town is surrounded by four kilometers of defensive walls with 23 watchtowers, built in the 18th century to protect against invasions. We set out early in the darkness on our journey to Luosto. Our plan is to climb its spectacular fjells (mountains) and explore its pristine wilderness. Our adventure starts at the secluded hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien in Luosto. In Finland, traditional wooden houses are often referred to as "wooden cabins" or "wooden chalets." The Finnish word for a wooden house is puutalo. The snow here resembles an untouched white carpet, with trees draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step disrupts the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature here in Luosto appears to be in a deep winter slumber. .

The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow, and nature appears to be in a deep winter slumber. We plan to climb its spectacular fjells (mountains) and explore its pristine wilderness.

We are on our way to Udabno. In the distance, we can already see the village, nestled among the colorful hills and bathed in the warm light of the setting sun. In the valley below, countless cows are grazing peacefully in the evening quiet. Udabno is located in the east of Georgia — a world of vast emptiness and rolling hills, near the border with Azerbaijan, and forms a fascinating contrast to the green, mountainous parts of the country. Here, an impressive semi-desert landscape unfolds, with colorful hills, dusty trails, and endless horizons. The earth shines in shades of yellow, red, and brown, especially when the sun hangs low in the sky, and the silence is almost tangible. Not far from the village of Udabno lies a small lake, better known as the swimming lake — a hidden gem in this rugged environment. This peaceful, natural lake is surrounded by gently rolling semi-desert hills and vast open plains.

Because it is a natural lake, its water level changes with the seasons. Thanks to its remote location, the lake feels incredibly serene — you’ll likely have the entire landscape to yourself. Located in the Kakheti region, near the border with Azerbaijan, the complex is partly carved into the rocks of a rugged, semi-desert landscape. It was founded in the 6th century by the Syrian monk David Garejeli. Over the following centuries, it became an important center of religion, art, and scholarship—especially during the medieval period. Despite repeated invasions, including by Mongols and Persians, it has always remained a place of deep spiritual meaning. This photo shows the courtyard of the Lavra Monastery, the oldest part of the complex. In the upper right corner, you can see the wooden gallery of the building that serves as the communal space for the monks — a place where they eat, gather, and find rest.
