In 2015, I was commissioned by the director of a new Vienna production of Ayad Akhtar's playDisgraced to design a prop. One of the play's protagonists, Emily, is an American artist who explores Islamic themes in her work. A painting of hers serves as a focal point for the set. It's described in the stage directions as "A vibrant, two-paneled image in luscious whites and blues, with patterns reminiscent of an Islamic garden". A character in the play later describes it as "a bending of the picture plane" and "tending toward the convex". This design represents my interpretation of that description. The base design juxtaposes two traditional patterns. The composition is warped in 3D, coloured, and processed for a painterly effect.

A collection of tiles I found in a shop in Erice, Sicily. I like them all.

Large view.

A beautiful and widespread gecko found in relatively dry habitats through a large swathe of Queensland and into New South Wales. So named for the dorsal 'box' pattern exbibited by many individuals.

I'm working on a series of designs based on oceans. This is the first one: the Pacific.

I've called these Cacti but I'm not really sure if it's the right name! They are beautiful and were just inside the main garden gate.

Cute animal pattern: smaller size, basic pieces. Gives you one the size of "Kittyzilla". Body is shorter and arms and legs are thinner. Picture is scaled to 8.5 inches wide, you can scale up or down as you like. Seam allowances are 1/4" using felt. See page 3 for additional pieces (tail, ears, etc). See notes on the picture for additional construction details. Link in the comments if you make one! :)

Thursday, 19 May 2022: our temperature is 4°C (windchill -2°C) at 1:30 pm. Sunrise was at 5:40 am, and sunset is at 9:25 pm. Very unpleasant weather today! Windy, pouring rain, and COLD.

"Warnings issued for up to 20 cm of spring snow over parts of Alberta. There's the potential for accumulating snow across Alberta’s foothills on Thursday, with the snow even creeping into populated centres such as Calgary."

Continuing with a few more old photos from my archives - again. Just not getting out enough and to the right places to take any decent shots.

This photo was taken at the Calgary Zoo on 22 November 2007.

After two years I finished up my moleskine Pattern Book. I love it!

An old school TV test pattern. This is the type of test pattern I remember waking up to when I was young and there was no programming on yet, I would stare at it until something came on - usually at 6 AM.

Patterns are like old habits that don't want to die. We are surrounded by them but not all of them are good. Breaking of the bad pattern can make your life more colourful and enjoyable...
