Grade l listed.
This is the sculpture in Centenary Square outside Baskerville House called Industry and Genius.
It honours John Baskerville as the inventor of the Baskerville typeface.
It stands outside the main entrance of Baskerville House.
It is by David Patten and was made in 1990. The letters spell out Virgil, the name of the Roman poet whose works were printed by Baskerville in his typeface in 1757.
It is made out of Portland stone and bronze.
Under the name of the sculpture it says A Fable.
That might be to do with one of Baskerville's poems.

St Margaret Pattens is rather overshadowed by the Walkie Talkie tower.
St Margaret Pattens was built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1687 following the destruction of an earlier building by the Great Fire of London in 1666. The church is dedicated to Margaret of Antioch. Pattens were raised wooden undershoes that people wore to keep their feet clear of the muddy streets of the City. Such shoes were made nearby
The Walkie Talkie (20 Fenchurch Street) is one of a recent slew of very tall, oddly shaped buildings that have added to the City like a civic codpiece. The concave front of the building caused the sun's rays to be reflected down to the street below cars and damaged cars. The matting covering the windows was subsequently added.

In truth, it took some to identify St Margaret from my shot.
I was wandering around Leadenhall looking for St Mary at Hill, and I could not get my bearings. Until I stopped to think about what I remembered of it, and thought it must be nearer the river.
I glimpsed St Margaret along a narrow street, and just took this shot, like the reflections and how the modern City towers over her tower.
We visited St Margaret a few years back on a rainy Open House weekend, sheltering form another rain storm that nearly drowned us. I think we need to to go back, or I do, as I seem to recall this as a very welcoming place, near to the Bank of England

I have a fondness for this little church, which sits pleasingly on the north side of Great Tower Street. The paved area in front gives it rather a provincial air, as if we were in the main shopping street of Norwich or York, and the building itself similarly has no airs and graces. Here, where London bends towards the grim old tower, Wren turned disciplinarian and built one of the simplest, starkest patterns of his career opined Wayland Young in an uncharacteristically purple passage. Yes, it is plain, and the interior is plain too, a simple box-like nave with a north aisle beyond. Plain glass, plain benches, a plain wooded sanctuary - even the reredos is understated. And yet there is a pleasing harmony here. I thought the church well-chosen by the tramp snoring away on one of the back benches - there were no discordant excitements here to keep him awake!
But there is plenty to interest, too. At the back are the churchwardens pews for St Margaret Pattens and St Gabriel Fenchurch, and these are the only surviving examples in the City. The beadle's pew survives too, and there are hat pegs for gentlemen, and perhaps all in all no other City church still has the calm and simplicity of 18th Century London life before the Victorian storm began. Mind you, those 18th Century gentlemen might have raised an eyebrow at the succession of young women carryng large exercise balls up the north aisle on their way to a pilates class in the north gallery, now a conference room.
A patten is a kind of wooden shoe, and a window of 2000 commemorates the Worshipful Company of Pattenmakers. But in fact the dedication was probably not a reference to pattenmakers at all, but to Ranulf Peyton, a Canon of St Pauls who owned the land in this parish.

In the late 1800's Col. Eugene Van Patten began construction of the Van Patten Mountain Camp, a remote resort nestled deep within the rocky heart of the Organ Mountain range.
The site of the resort is tucked into the rocky peaks at an elevation of 6,000 feet (which is 2,000 feet higher than Las Cruces). The hotel was constructed of native rock a a mud based plaster. Such people as Pat Garret and Pancho Villa stayed at the resort.

I joined Fiona Patten MP, upper house representative of the Reason Australia party, and the Friends of the Earth Yes 2 Renewables Team, to celebrate Patten's support for the Victorian Renewable Energy Target (VRET) with a solar-powered beer at the Hawkers micro brewery in Reservoir.
Since installing 190 solar panels on their rooftop, co-founder of Hawkers Beer Mazen Hajjar told us they've saved almost 40% on their electricity bill, showing action on climate change makes good business sense. Hajjar is angry and passionate about the need for #climateaction, and it was so refreshing meeting a business person who gets that it's a #climateemergency, and whose business model is based on reducing grid energy, reducing waste and recycling.
Ms Patten has shown leadership on renewable energy and climate change, and deserves recognition for working with the Daniel Andrews government to secure good oucomes. All parties should support jobs and investment in renewable energy. It's all about innovation in the energy transition under way.
All MPs should follow Patten's lead by voting yes to the VRET when it is debated in the upper house of state parliament.

North Street, Burlington, Vermont USA • Ethan Allen made a significant contribution to the early history of Vermont, at that time called the New Hampshire Grants, which then constituted the northern frontier of the New England colonies.
In 1902, William J. Van Patten bought the property in Burlington that was once Ethan Allen's for $20,000. Appreciating its historical significance, Van Patten set apart about 12 acres, including the ledge of rock now enclosed by the park, and offered it to the Sons of the American Revolution on condition that a stone tower, a memorial to General Ethan Allen, be erected on the top of the ledge and a road built leading to the tower and to Ethan's former house. Accepting the offer, the S.A.R. Built and dedicated the present tower in 1905. …
The Norman-style Tower in Ethan Allen Park, built in 1905 to honor Ethan Allen's life and deeds and as a memorial to him and his Green Mountain Boys. Van Patten himself designed the tower. …
In later years Van Patten told of his reason for buying the land:
I was first interested in the property through Mr. Edward P. Hatch, who about five years ago asked me if I had ever visited it and if I knew what a beautiful view was obtained from what was then known as Prospect Rock. Although I had lived 30 years in Burlington, with the great majority of our people I had never been on the spot and knew nothing of the beauties of it, but upon Mr. Hatch's recommendation I visited it, and was at once struck with the desirability of the property as a park for our citizens. At that time we had no place where people could go and freely enjoy themselves without trespassing on private property. I became so much interested in the matter that when I found that Col. H. J. Brookes had placed the property in the hands of Mr. E. P. Shaw for sale, I feared it might be sold to some person who would be unwilling to sell it to the city or who would cut off the woods so as to spoil it for park purposes. Because of this fear and my great desire that it should be available to Burlington, I purchased the farm of which it was part, paying Colonel Brookes $20,000 for the same.

431 Pine Street, Burlington, Vermont USA • By the rear entrance is this sculpture made to look like a cluster of red-painted tree trunks; they're actually thick plastic, hollow and lighted.
Built in 1900, the Maltex Building was the factory headquarters of the Malted Cereal Company, later known as Maltex, which produced cereal and other malted products through the early 1970s. The company was famous for its maple-flavored cereal called Maypo. The building was built by William J. Van Patten, president of the company and a prominent citizen who also served as mayor of Burlington and a state senator.
At its peak, Maltex was producing up to 300 cases of cereal a day, and was a desirable place of employment at the turn of the century. Employees were treated well and had access to affordable lunches and other benefits rarely granted to employees of that era. Later, Maltex was acquired by another company and the building became home to other industries. Then in 1984, a federal grant helped to transform it into a thriving business haven filled with historic high-ceilinged office space and light manufacturing facilities.
The spirit of Maltex continues today, as the building is one of the most desirable places to work in Burlington’s south end. Its pleasant and professional offices have easy access to cafés, services and art galleries nearby, plus a bakery, market/deli and coffee shop right across the street. – From the website of today's Maltex Building.

These old City of London churches all have such evocative names.This view is looking up St Mary-at-Hill towards Rood Street, crossing Eastcheap and Great Tower Street. Both of these churches were rebuilt by Christopher Wren inthe 17th century, after the Great Fire and, unlike neighbouring St Dunstan-in-the-East, survived the Blitz.

There were other questions.
They were as simple.

I wrote down the exact weight of
an elephant's dream
Yet today, many years later,
For my living, I sweep the streets
or clean out the toilets of the fat
hotels.
Why? Because constantly I failed
my exams.
