Taken this afternoon during a walk around the Lujiazui area of Shanghai, China.

One of the tower cranes which are mounted on top of the new Shanghai Tower (which is still under construction - when finished it will be the second tallest building in the world) was lifting a section of the 2nd crane up from ground level to the top of the building.

That and the sun shining brightly behind the "twisted" exterior facade of the new Shanghai Tower had me pointing the camera skyward to capture the action, with the Shanghai World Financial Centre and Jin Mao tower's looking on as they supervised the "sky lift" work.

One month is -down- now, only twelve* more to go! (*apparently I want to do more than 365 days, and add extra months.)

Today's FGR challenge is Nightmare's.

So, I decided to incorporate a portrait I've been wanting to do for a really long time. I'm not really scared of things in any sub-conscious kind of way (or even a visceral way); the nightmares I have are about things that have happened to me in the past. So, I face my fears in my sleep, where my alter ego battles out its right for a nightmare free life; one separate from my past & the pain in it.

Robert Hoppe has carved out a place in American history for his artistic accomplishments. Best known for his set, costume, and poster designs for live and motion picture productions, Robert Hoppe was actually a diversely skilled artists. Excelling in draft making, sculpture, and painted, Robert Hoppe brought his broad understanding of numerous art mediums into each piece he created.

Robert Hoppe’s art-deco style harkened back to the 1920s movement pioneered by the visionary Erte. The art deco images present by Hoppe create a larger-than-life feeling that reminisces of old Hollywood glamour.

Through his career, Robert Hoppe was one of the most awarded set designer, costumer designer, and film artists in history. With a resume that includes an Emmy for Scenic design and the prestigious Desi Award in Graphic design, Robert Hoppe was really the first artist to elevate set design to a level appreciated for its stunning artistic merit. His work was so visually stunning that the New York Times remarked the best part of the show “Rialto” was “the way it looks”- the way it looks, of course being a credit to Robert Hoppe.

Although Robert Hoppe’s aesthetic is undeniably Art Deco, he updated Art Deco in a way that made it a modern interpretation of its original form. He expanded its relevance through his modern updates- making it at once both statuesque and hard while simultaneously romantic and soft.

Today, Robert Hoppe’s work remains as some of the most influential in television, movie, and live action history.

Some of you will get this one...

My favorite part of his sticker collection on his iBook.

He loves me - even with my "antisocial" tendencies and weird nicknames.

If you came straight to this picture then --you are in the middle of a sequence that must be read in order. Please start here--

Despite its collapse and the hope of seeing it properly for sunset, the most intense part was still to be experienced. As I stood and watched the sun sink down below the frosty horizon, I was overcome with a feeling of vertigo, of tipping backwards, spinning and falling. I know it is obvious to us all that the sun does not rise or set in reality but appears to, as our planet spins. But in this moment instead of knowing that truth, I felt it, deep within the whole of my body.

As the sun disappeared I felt the earth tipping backwards, turning away from the stationary sun. The overpowering vertigo made me feel the rotation of the earth so much more vividly than I have ever before. It was quite strange and intense.

Land art is all these things. It isn't just using nature's materials to create something. It uses natures's cycles and patterns and flows to cast its magic touch on whatever you try to create. Without a week of temperatures constantly below zero, it wouldn't have been possible. Made across the winter solstice, it connected one year of seasons with the next. Early evening moonrise meant that it had time to freeze before dawn so that its lean would not mean its demise, at least not until the sun had melted it slightly. And combination of all these things allowed me to feel something I already knew. As to feel something is so much more powerful than to know it.

And now I feel the rotation of the earth and how I am connected to it a little more than I did before.

Look at the gunk in the side stones spoiling the color. The owner didn't know that she could clean her diamond ring every day.

My mom and I go to the cemetery to "visit" our relatives more and more often. We talk about what the future is going to be like when my parents aren't around, we talk to the people buried there, we talk to "god" some times. Some times we just kind of walk around. Today was one of those days.

I have no silly face for today, I don't feel happy, not in the traditional sense of the word. My friend's father passed away tonight. It's good, it's what's best, in some ways for everyone. It's not to say the life of this person is devalued, it isn't, but now they can rest in peace and his family can go through a long and hard healing process. They can start to take care of each other, of themselves.

If you have a moment, say a prayer or two for the family left behind, then hug someone you love. Thank you.

Boarded up windows & painted. Don't know why or when or who... but I thought it was cool. It didn't come out very well though.

The first thing which caught my attention, was the "Registered Trademark" logo on the sign. Seemed a little odd to me. What, are they like the Burger King of psychics?

But, the thing that made me twist my head like a dog hearing something odd was, the psychics can see the past and the future, fine; that's kinda in the job description. But, seeing the present? How does that work? "I foresaw you parking your car and coming in to see us". That's not psychic ability you idiot! that's looking out the damn window!

Plus, they have Tarot Cards...I wonder if they play Texas Hold 'Em with them?

We pulled it off... despite the blizzard conditions, a first in the history of my eclectic, small hometown of Viroqua, WI. The debut night of our successful Viroqua Town Dance, all-ages Rave.

Within the warm confines of our town Public Market an almost surreal collection of souls...little kids, seniors, teens, hipsters, hippies and town characters. Long-distance travelers and locals alike.... town & country, and a groove that didn't t hush until 4am. We just don't get enough opportunities to move.

We had an intimidating doorman who opened the way to the Greenman Music Hall for paying patrons.... Inside, Sable Knight (above) and Bradley expertly spun the vinyl.

Between the transitive beats there was ice cream, espresso and organic pizza at Sibby's just down from the Dance Hall inside the indoor market courtyard.

Unity though music...in...deed.

Viroqua, Wisconsin ...gateway to America's unglaciated, Driftless Region ...a small portion of Earth that has miraculously watched virtually unperturbed as each ice age came and went. Viroqua, forever unglaciated it seems.

In a way working with pearls is grounding for me, next month it will be 9 years since my first jewelry lesson. I was in a complete different field, really didn't know what to do with myself and had far more money than I do now but I simply wasn't happy.

Sometimes things magically come your way, even when you, yourself don't even know what you need. All I knew is I needed something I wouldn't get bored of, and with jewelry everyday I can make something different, plus I make the decisions and work on my future with my own two hands, this is what makes me leap out of bed every morning and go to bed grateful after a full day. There was no turning back and I quit my job (as a crazy rushed decision), didn't have a lot of tools, took two hour bus rides to go to class or to polish something.

What does this have to do with pearls?, back then I was still learning and I didn't know how to set stones at all.. and for my first two years making jewelry my pearl collections fed me, paid for my rent and helped me get the right tools... Over time you do develop love, bonds and memories with certain materials and techniques because they are all small elements of you, your story and growth.

The pattern of the steps, the angle of the photo, the fade into the black backdrop gives a sense of eternal timelessness...while the quiet couple sits contemplating their past, present and future.
