Passiflora caerulea

Native plant of Argentina

This Passiflora is a continual decor from May to the end of summer.

'Pink Passion' blooms generously. The big, very original, double, star-shaped flowers are bright deep pink.

The thick pale green leaves are three-lobed.

This selection behaves like a slow creeper of reduced size.

The plant is not hardy. It is necessary to protect it in winter.

Passion flower leaves caught in the sun. Not sure which kind they belong to without the flowers, but they belong to either P. x violacea or to P. caerulea.

I found this passionflower at the park this morning ! It's such a beautiful and exotic looking flower and I love it. Years ago I tried to grow a passionflower in my garden but it didn't survive for long and I decided to better admire them elsewhere. :)

Passiflora, known also as Passion flowers or Passion Vines, flower from early summer until the Autumn. Depending on the variety, some flowers only last one day but other varieties may last several days.

"One day you will just be a memory for some people, do your best to be a good one."

Just noticed a bloom of Passiflora appear in the Goat Willow tree , amazing what appears in that tree - there is this Passiflora growing in there along with a Wild Rose and Honeysuckle as well .

I stopped down a bit but the focus is quite narrow and it was a choice of getting the visitor sharp or the centre of the bloom - I chose the centre of the flower !!

Passiflora, known also as the passion flowers or passion vines, is a genus of about 550 species of flowering plants, the type genus of the family Passifloraceae.

They are mostly tendril-bearing vines, with some being shrubs or trees. They can be woody or herbaceous. Passion flowers produce regular and usually showy flowers with a distinctive corona. There can be as many as eight coronal series, as in the case of P. xiikzodz. The flower is pentamerous and ripens into an indehiscent fruit with numerous seeds.

Bluecrown passionflower (Passiflora caerulea) is a species of flowering plant native to South America (Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil). It is a vigorous, deciduous or semi-evergreen tendril vine growing to 10 m (33 ft) or more. The ovoid orange fruit, growing to 6 cm (2 in), is edible but bland. Bluecrown passionflower is widely cultivated as a wall-climber or as groundcover. In milder temperate areas it can be grown outside, and can become invasive, the twining shoots constantly appearing unless eradicated. Though the fruit is edible, it is rather insipid when eaten raw. It can substitute for blackberries. A tea can be made of the flower which is said to alleviate stress and anxiety. The flower of the passion fruit is the national flower of Paraguay. The intricate structure of the flower has generated Christian symbolism, each part representing a different part of the Passion of Christ.

Kwiat męczennicy kwitnący na ogrodzeniu domu naszych gospodarzy w Zaostrogu (Chorwacja) :)

Męczennica błękitna (Passiflora caerulea), zwana również męczennicą – gatunek pnącza należącego do rodziny męczennicowatych. Pochodzi z lasów Brazylii i Argentyny. Misjonarze, którzy dotarli do krajów Ameryki Południowej, doszukali się w ich budowie symboli męki Jezusa Chrystusa: 5 płatków i 5 działek kielicha to dziesięciu apostołów, 5 pręcików to pięć ran, 3 znamiona słupka to trzy gwoździe którymi przybito go do krzyża, przykoronek to korona cierniowa. Kwitnie przez całe lato, ale pojedynczy kwiat kwitnie tylko 24 h.

Planting Outdoors

Plant hardy passion flowers in the spring after the cold weather has passed (typically late May/early June)

Hardy passion flowers planted in the garden border, produce the best growth and flowers when in a sunny, sheltered position away from cold drying winds. A south- or west- facing fence or wall is ideal

Hardy Passiflora caerulea can reach 10m (33ft) high and so needs space to grow and flower well

Passion flowers climb by means of tendrils and need to be planted and trained against a trellis or horizontally-wired fence or wall on which the tendrils can cling.
