This year will mark the 10th anniversary of the grounding and subsequent helicopter evacuation of 22 Filipino and Korean crew members form the Pasha Bulka. The extra-tropical cyclone or east coast low as they are known on the east coast of Australia, was well forecast and the Newcastle port corporation radioed the 56 ships waiting off the coast requesting they move further offshore before the arrival of the approaching storm. Ten of the ships ignored the warning and the Pasha Bulka subsequently became beached with both bow and stern stuck in the sand almost parallel to Nobbys beach in Newcastle. Record ocean swell heights of 14.13m (46ft) were recorded at the deep water buoy 10km (6.2 miles) off Sydney with 296mm (11.6 in) of rain falling in the 24 hour period causing widespread flooding. After two failed attempts the ship itself was eventually salvaged on its third attempt many weeks later at a cost of $1.8 million. The 225 m (738 ft) long, Panamax bulk carrier, was then towed to Japan where the extensive damage to the ship itself was repaired. It was subsequently renamed the MV Drake. New South Wales, Australia. A particularly humbling experience to watch!

Love Life, Love Photography

Ever since seeing pictures of these incredible butterflies, i've wanted to catch up with them myself. The wish came true in an area of wildflower meadow on the fringes of the national park. There were at least 2 in a relatively small area - both showing signs of wear, even so it was a delight to be able to spend time with them.

The famous Aslan Pasha mosque at the town of Ioannina in northern Greece under the blue hour light. I was there almost every night capturing it under lots of different light situations. I think I have at least two more worth posting with much more clouds and more prominent sunset colors. Stay tuned...

It was one of the libraries established outside Istanbul during the reign of Mahmud II and was built in 1827-28 by Mehmed Necip Pasha, who was famous for his services as governor of Damascus and especially Baghdad. In Tire, which is similar to Ottoman cities such as Manisa and Bursa in terms of its historical riches, the library, which is one of the last important examples of the many works created since the Principalities period, was established near the old small library named after Ibn Melek, one of the Ottoman scholars, and on the site of the Ismâil Efendi Madrasah.

The library currently has a total of 2282 Arabic, Persian and Turkish works, 1147 of which are manuscripts and 1135 of which are printed. 671 of these are valuable works provided by Necip Pasha and preserved in red leather cases after maintenance. With grants from various individuals and organizations, the total number of books has reached 11,330.

Having just found herself some fruit along came Oberon and stole it but not before Pasha let her annoyance be known.

Hassan Pasha Mosque in Kos, seen from the Ancient Agora archaeological site.

The rich history of Kos has vividly left its mark on the architecture of the islands. That is the case with the mosques of Kos Town, strong reminders of the Ottoman rule on the island, that lasted for about four centuries, from 1523 to 1912. Today, two Ottoman mosques survive time in Kos Town and they can be seen in the centre of the city.

The Loggia Mosque also known as the Hassan Pasha Mosque, located at Hippocrates Plane Tree Square in Kos, was founded by the Turkish admiral Ghazi Hassan Pasha in 1786.

Ancient architectural elements from Roman remains have been incorporated into the fabric of the mosque and its minaret, and the mosque was possibly built on the location of a Byzantine temple of St George.

The three storey building is locked and unused and still bears the marks of wartime bombardment, especially in the tracery of the upper windows. The ground floor is taken up by several shops.

During a violent storm on 9-6-2007 the Pasha Bulka ran aground. It was quite a sight and many Novocastrians went to the beach for a look.

Looking closely at this image reveals a lot of noise etc because I took this in 2007 with a camera which has been replaced by improved models, but it seems like we spend thousands for small steps forward. The camera companies must be laughing their heads off as they hold back some technologies and keep prices up.

Ishak Pasha Palace (Turkish: İshak Paşa Sarayı) is a semi-ruined palace and administrative complex located in the Doğubeyazıt district of Ağrı province of eastern Turkey.

The Ishak Pasha palace is an Ottoman-period palace whose construction was started in 1685 by Colak Abdi Pasha, the bey of Beyazit province, continued by his son İshak Pasha and completed by his grandson Mehmet Pasha. According to the inscription on its door, the Harem Section of the palace was completed by his grandson Ishak (Isaac) Pasha in 1784.

The Palace is more of a complex than a palace; it is the second administrative campus after the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul and the most famous of the palaces built in recent decades.
