Compliant democracy- just following the party line!

Do you remember when there were party lines? When you only dialed 3 letters or numbers? Or had a prefix and then a couple of numbers behind it? When I saw this scene pulling out of my driveway, party line is what popped into my head!! Hope you enjoy and this brought a smile to you!

“If E-mail had been around before the telephone was invented,

people would have said "hey, forget e-mail

- with this new telephone invention I can actually talk to people.”

"I keep the telephone of my mind open to peace, harmony, health, love and abundance. Then whenever doubt, anxiety, or fear try to call me, they keep getting a busy signal and soon they'll forget my number.”

~ Edith Armstrong ~

Phone that was in the house I grew up in during the 80s. My mother never got rid of it :)

Truly, this was the highlight of our Christmas visit.

And, per usual, I was shaking so much with excitement I really botched up the pic . . . but the expressions are too wonderful to lose . . . so I am going to print this out and send it as a thank you to my granddaughters for their long trip east! When they discovered our dial-up phone (which still works better than any other portable in our home), the playtime was endless . . . they were "finger dialing" their mom on her cell, their dad on his new watch/phone/computer . . . it was hilarious!

This wonderful display was in a shop window on the Public Square in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. History is indeed all around us. I tip my hat to the folks who not only saved these fine bits of history, but shared them in such a fantastic arrangement. Is it terribly ironic that I took the picture with an iPhone? Thanks!

A rather stylish piece of work by the illustrator C W Bacon for the British GPO. At the time, as the number of people wanting telephones outstripped capacity many people 'shared' lines - my grandparents did and it meant that sometime, when you wanted to the line was engaged. The leaflet notes that overhearing was possible - unless you wanted to make an emergency call when "he would undoubtedly give way"!

A reminder of what happenes when you don't hang up properly and also of the days when 'party' lines were common! At the time exchange capacity was quite an issue for the Post Office Telephones service so for many suburban homeowners the only way to become a subscriber was to share the line with someone else. That meant when they were using it you couldn't and vice versa. This advert was common issue across PO directories of the era and is from the Sheffield 1960 edition.

to be continued...

For as long as I can remember, we've driven by this scene (well not as abstracted), just down the road from our home near a nature preserve. Forever I've made it a tradition to "count" the number of perched birds which gather to as many as 30 or more each night during the summer months. And I've always wished I'd had my camera. Well tonight I was only carrying my point and shoot, but got a few shots before total darkness set in. Of course I felt like playing and here's the result. Interestingly, before googling these amazing seabirds, I had no idea that they feature quite commonly in heraldry and medieval ornamentation, usually in their "wing-drying" pose, which was seen as representing the Christian cross.

“Cell phones, to me, are a joke. When we grew up we had a party line for six homes, meaning you had to wait for everyone else from the other five homes to be off the line before you could make a call. You know what? Society seemed to get along fine. When you got your own telephone land line, it was like you were a wealthy person.” ~ Charles Gallagher ~

Can you imagine this world today without cell phones!?!

Buds are flower babies. You watch them bud and blossom. You watch them grow and mature into, hopefully, beautiful flowers. Buds represent the child in all of us that we know is there, but others do not see. If we are 20 or 90, that child is still there and occasionally comes out to play. Allow your inner child to come out and plaly today.

Have a fun day. Take time to dance as though no one were looking. : )

This is the phone that was on the farm that my wife Sammy's parents bought back in 1941. It had a party line, and you identified whether the call was for you or not by the number of rings, and you rang the phone by cranking the handle on the side. If you needed to call someone who wasn’t on your party line, one long crank on the handle would raise the operator. It was always fun for Sammy and her brother to quietly pick up the receiver when the call was for someone other than them and listen in on the conversations of others; and of course, the operator could listen in on all conversations, so she was the chief source of gossip in the town of 800 souls. As I recall, this phone was replaced by a modern dial phone around 1960. In the small rural town I lived in in western Massachusetts, my folks had a phone just like this up until the early 1950s.

You can see the date this phone was patented: April 16, 1918

GMA Goes To Moscow ...

my super fat tuesday tribute, a little late. he got those beads in french class and wouldn't take them off for four days.

Who's afraid of all those nasty ol' EMFs?

I owe the title to my wife Sammy. She walked through the room when I was working on this, and all she said was "party line" and continued on out of the room. I was going to call it "high powered convention," but I like her title better.

Then again, maybe "party line"doesn't mean anything, or means something political to many of you Flickrites who weren't around in the days of telephone party lines, when several people shared one phone line, and you could listen in on the conversations of neighbors on your line. Of course, we never did that...☺

GMA Goes To Moscow ...

Take a trip back 50 years ago and see the businesses that were in our villages and the people that lived there. Many are long gone but many are still here. This telephone directory was mailed to each customer by Kaladar-Northern Telephone System with 3 cents postage (stamp is on the back cover). Interesting features include how to use a rotary-dial telephone, how to make a long-distance call and how to use a ‘party line’.

The directory covers Kaladar, Flinton, Northbrook, Harlowe, Henderson, Cloyne, Fernleigh, Plevna, Ardoch, Ompah, Vennachar, Denbigh, Griffith, and Matawatchan.

View the directory here: pioneer.mazinaw.on.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/1968-Tel...

Copies of other years can be found in the Pioneer Museum in Cloyne, open from June to Labour Day.

Here is another vignette inside the McIntosh/Lohr farmhouse. The party was every time you used the telephone. I expect that your neighbors all knew your business. This view makes the house look pretty much austere but it was really not so much. I think it remains more spartan so that folks have more room to move and examine the furnishings. The interior is not so large as it seems from Highway #66. No real frills though. I decided that the sky was terrible and it would soon get too hot so I'd grab some inside shots at McIntosh. Here is the original farm house from the kitchen. These were the items accumulated back in the day of practical accumulation.

I had taken shots inside with D70 but I always thought of bringing the D700 out on a future trek back to the MacIntosh farm venue. In keeping with the abandoned farm theme, I decided to drop it on this set. It's always fun to shoot an old abandoned farm but it's a bonus to find some of the old machinery remaining. There are libraries of photos hidden in the details.

Here we are at the MacIntosh Farm Preservation Center outside of Longmont, Colorado which lies across MacIntosh Lake behind me. Boulder County has collected many old agricultural related machines on the property that boasts two large barns. It's truly amazing that this is actual Boulder County OPEN space.

I made quite a few of these for a mix trade that I'm participating in.
