The European Kingfisher or Common Kingfisher, Alcedo atthis, is widely distributed in Europe, Africa, and Asia. It is resident except in northern areas where the rivers freeze. It will then move to milder regions. In most of its European range it is the only kingfisher.
The general colour of the upper parts of the adult bird is bright metallic blue, cobalt on the back, and showing greenish reflections on the head and wings. The ear coverts and under parts are warm chestnut, the chin and sides of neck white.
The bill is blackish and reddish orange at the base; the legs are bright red with a dark blue stripe. In the young the bill is black. Length averages 19 cm (7.5 inches) and wings average 7.5 cm (2.95 inches).
The flight of the Kingfisher is rapid, the short rounded wings whirring until they appear a mere blur. It usually flies near the water, but during courtship the male chases the female through and over the trees with loud shrill whistles.
From February onwards the male has a trilling song, a modulated repetition of many whistles. He also signals with a whistle to the female when he is feeding her, this being his share of the nesting duties. This whistle is produced even when his bill is loaded with food, yet is clear and distinct. The female will reply and emerge from the nesting hole, and may fly to meet him, take the fish from him in the air, and return to the nest.
The bird has regular perches or stands from which it fishes. These may be a few inches or many feet above the water. It sits upright, its tail pointed downwards. It drops suddenly with a splash and usually returns at once with a struggling captive.
Large fish are beaten on a bough or rail; small fish and insects are promptly swallowed. A fish is usually lifted and carried by its middle, but its position is changed, sometimes by tossing it into the air, before it is swallowed head downwards.

Dear friends,
Here is my first work with pics taken with my new toy, the Nikon D300. I finally decided to buy it. Looks like a birthday gift to myself! :-)))
Since few times, I try to process my HDRs a bit differently (not so strong and a lot of corrections after the tone mapping. Some parts are HDR and some others are not HDR)....
Happy week-end to all :-)

We are not in "Parts Unknown", but will be in alternate housing for the next 6 weeks while work is done to renovate our condo. I am hoping to be able to post my photo of the day and so forth, but may be limited in doing more. Hope you bear with me while we beautify our place!
This tiny bird winters in South Florida and the Caribbean and summer in the mid and northern parts of the US. The flowering mango trees are a perfect play to catch insects
I spent hours last week seperating a box of old watch parts into usable and throw away pieces. The gears fascinated me. They are so perfectly balanced that when you spin them like a spinning top they twirl and twirl and twirl forever. But adding a wooden spool handle upsets the balance and my idea to recycle the gears into gilded spinning tops with vibrantly colored wooden handles failed. Back to the mental drawing board.
The historically preserved half-timbered cemetery church from the second half of the 16th century and its surrounding area have undergone extensive renovations in the past five years. Thanks to these changes, the complex has transformed into a pleasant oasis in the middle of the city, radiating the charm of history, comfort and interesting discovery. Additionally, there is plenty of entertainment and experiences for the whole family.
Visitors can explore a lapidarium with historical stone and wooden artifacts (crosses, tombstones, parts of portals, and sculptures) as well as partially restored original architecture (floors, roofs, galleries, benches, and more) inside the church. The church can be visited during May and June only on weekends, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. During the summer holidays, it will be open every day except Monday.
The historic structure is surrounded on all sides by a newly revitalized park with rich shrub and herb plantings, providing visitors a pleasant retreat amid a flood of flowers and scents. Nectar-producing plants also offer food for pollinators and, consequently for their predators, such as songbirds. Trees felled during the renovations have been repurposed as beetle habitats, creating a habitat for beneficial insects associated with decaying wood.
Part of the park, freely accessible every day except Monday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, includes a new nature trail with accurately rendered models of the most common local insect species and interesting information about them. The trail connects the church area with its immediate surroundings, creating a larger complex that, in addition to educational stops, offers entertainment, social, spiritual and cultural-aesthetic experiences.

M9 872 approaches Colombo Maradana with a train from Kandy on the final full day of our Sri Lankan trip.
This really was a welcome sight as aside from a number of stored locomotives on Maradana depot we had seen absolutely no evidence of the M9 class for the previous 8 days of the trip, nor my previous visit in 2015 - so they do work sometimes!
10 of these Alstom locomotives were built in 2000 for Sri Lankan Railways at Belfort in France- unlike their more familiar cousins the EWS class 67, these locomotives are fitted with a Ruston power plan and certainly sound quite different as a result!
Since their introduction the class has been plagued by problems with maintenance and the cost and supply of spare parts leaving them as the least utilised fleet of locos in the country, often with only one or two machines in traffic.
My 2024 trip report from Sri Lanka is now online here.

Update: The Mushroom House becomes a Set! The design was chosen for the BDP Series 2 and will be available for pre-order in June 2024!
_____
I need your help again! My Mushroom House is now part of the BrickLink Designer Program Series 2 and could become a set with your vote.
After it had no luck on LEGO Ideas after reaching the 10k, this is a second chance to make it happen! Thanks so much.
_____
Before submitting the Mushroom House to the BDP I had to make some adjustments which ended up in rebuilding the whole thing and making numerous little improvements. Also, thanks to many new parts that I could use.

The Pannonian Plain is a large plain in Central Europe that remained when the Pliocene Pannonian Sea dried out. It is a geomorphological subsystem of the Alps-Himalaya system.
The river Danube divides the plain roughly in half.
The plain is divided among Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine.
The plain is roughly bounded by the Carpathian mountains, the Alps, the Dinaric Alps and the Balkan mountains.
Although rain is not plentiful, it usually falls when necessary and the plain is a major agricultural area; it is sometimes said that these fields of rich loamy loess soil could feed the whole of Europe. For its early settlers, the plain offered few sources of metals or stone. Thus when archaeologists come upon objects of obsidian or chert, copper or gold, they have almost unparalleled opportunities to interpret ancient pathways of trade.
The precursor to the present plain was a shallow sea that reached its greatest extent during the Pliocene, when three to four kilometres of sediments were deposited.
The plain was named after the Pannonians, a northern Illyrian tribe. Various different peoples inhabited the plain during its history. In the first century BC, the eastern parts of the plain belonged to the Dacian state, and in the first century AD its western parts were subsumed into the Roman Empire. The Roman province named Pannonia was established in the area, and the city of Sirmium, today Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, became one of the four capital cities of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century.
For those of you who wanted a breakdown. I've only done half of the parts but you should be able to figure out the build from this and the video :)

On the way to Limni, Evia island.
The island of Evia lies along the Eastern coast of Central Greece, and is accessible to the mainland via two bridges, an old wooden bridge and a contemporary suspension bridge. There are also frequent ferries to several parts of the island. It is 175 km long and is the second largest island in Greece, and the third largest in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Taken on the weekend of November 29th-30th, 2014 while my English wife Theresa Jane Brown and I were visiting friends.

ISS047e022280 (03/26/2016) --- This interesting Earth observation image from the International Space Station seems an abstract painting but is really the outskirts of the Namib Desert in southwest Africa. One of the oldest and largest deserts in the world, the Namib stretches inland from the Atlantic Ocean, covering large swathes of Namibia and parts of Angola and South Africa. This arid hotspot surprisingly supports a diverse number of plants and animals, some of which are found nowhere else in the world.

Got the feeling I wanted to try and build some nice modern scene, I’ve always liked the ones here on Flickr, but rooms/building have never been my thing to build, and I’ve never got the parts either.
But when I started this it actually felt good, and I’m pretty proud how it turned out, hope you’ll like it!

The cheetah is a big cat that inhabits most of Africa and parts of Iran. The cheetah can run as fast as 109.4 to 120.7 km/h, faster than any other land animal. It covers distances up to 500 m in short bursts, and can accelerate from 0 to 96 km/h in three seconds.
